    Motherboard Problems

I am running a Dell 960 Desktop dual booting W10/Ubuntu 18.04. My motherboard went bad. I have replaced MB's before and have installed Capacitors in MBs. I replaced it with another of the same kind(oy958c MB). It took almost a minute to sign in. I had the option of Ubuntu or w10. Ubuntu opened without any problems. I try to open W10 and all I get is the 4 pane window and no spinning dial. After a long wait it says Windows encountered a problem and needs to restart. gives me a error code of 0xc0000225. I tried Boot Repair and got same results. I tried my W10 flash Drive and same thing. It keeps telling me I need to repair but I can't get pass Windows screeen. No matter what I do it does the same routine. I installed a fresh formatted NTFS HD and tried to install a new copy of W10 from my Flash Drive and I got the same result.

Is there a setting I need to change in the bios?

I would shut off secure boot and Fast boot.

Here is the clean install tutorial

Reset the BIOS in this old OptiPlex system (Dell only supports XP to Win 7 for this model). Clear the CMOS Memory, with the PC powered off, remove the CR2032 coin cell on the motherboard for at least 10 minutes. Reinstall the battery and then power on and try.

Does this have any beeps or diagnostic lights at power on?

I can not find secure boot in Bios. Disabled fast boot and it made no difference. It keeps going back to I need to repair W10. However W10 Flash Drive, W10 DVD and Boot Repair DVD do not work as it keeps saying I need to repair W10 but won't let me in to repair. Boot Repair says it will now boot but all it does is tell me to repair. Also a clean Hard Drive gives me the same result.

The bios on this Motherboard is A11. The newest one is A15 I believe.
I have two other 960's that I am running Dual Boot both W10 & Ubuntu 18.04. I have re-installed W10 on both without any problems.
This Motherboard is in a contentious loop. No matter what I do all it does is go back to Window encountered a problem & I need to repair W10.

You could consider reflashing the BIOS in case it has become corrupted

You didn't answer either of my suggestions. (1) did you clear the CMOS memory? (2) is there any diagnostic beeps or lights at power on? (If no beeps or diagnostic lights at power on that says the hardware passed the POST (Power On Self Test)).

The CMOS memory clear procedure will reset the BIOS and we have found, on the Dell support forums, this clears up a lot of flakey problems.

Sorry to not have replied. Had Family matters that needed attention.
This is what I have tried and nothing works.
1- I removed battery and waited over 10 minutes before installing battery, also tried new battery. Bios was a11 at start & a11 later. It gives me the option of choosing Linux or W10. I choose W10 and it goes to the 4 pane windows logo & then gives a BSOD that I need to run repair option. However when I put in either w10 flash drive or w10 DVD it gives me the BSOD that I need to run repair option.
2- I tried a clean formatted to ntfs HD & get the same BSOD.
3- I pulled the old HD & put it in my other Computer as a test & it booted fine. I was even able to run virus scans, malware scans and rootkit scans & all were clean. I even ran chkdsk c: /f /r /x. I put HD back in original computer and still get the BSOD.
4- I tried 4-2gig new sticks of ram from crucial & even tried them 1 at a time & still get BSOD.
5- I tried 2-4gig new sticks of ram from crucial & even tried them 1 at a time & still get BSOD.
Linux boots fine with no problems. Only w10 will not boot.
I have spent more money on this than I wanted so I think I am just going to junk this one computer.
Thank all of you who replied.

Have you tried running the Dell hardware diagnostics https://www.dell.com/support/home/uk...sdt1/quicktest

You might have a Windows 10 configuration problem if Linux boots OK. Do you have a backup to recover from? Else you could try a repair install. I once had similar problems to yours when I accidentally disabled a key driver in Autoruns.

Hi wvman man I am sorry you are having such problems with your computer. If you would like to continue trying to fix it, I have some questions and some observations.

If you can boot into your Linux OS, I find it highly unlikely you have a motherboard problem. Perhaps a bad setting in bios, but the board is apparently working.

Do you have Windows and Linux on the same hard drive or are they on separate drives? And are you dual booting or do the drives boot independently of each other? Will your Linux boot if you remove the Windows drive? I am assuming from your above post (yes I know what happens when You assume things) they are on separate drives.

Have you tried to boot into safe mode? If you could try that it could be helpful. If you try please select the option of safe mode with networking. If you are successful, try to let it run for a little while.

Could you give us some detailed system specs? I looked up your model computer and the info I found said you are running a Core 2 Quad CPU. Would that be close?

What happened immediately before this problem started? Did you change some hardware, install some new/different software or drivers?

What sata mode are you using (IDE/AHCI or Raid)? Have you tried to set optimized defaults in your bios? It is usually F5 on most boards. If you try that make sure afterwards you set it to the same sata mode you are using right now.
