I suspect you did not get that disc from Microsoft.
I suspect that was the cause of the thread starter's another problem at Windows update cleanup - why is it taking so long? Solved - Windows 10 Forums

    Thank you Matthew Wai

@rivre, it’s good that you ran disk cleanup: 30GB taking about 90 minutes isn’t unusual.
I’d like to recommend you run Disk Cleanup during the week before the 2nd Tue of the month each month.
--- You should find that 30GB of disk cleanup should not be the norm for a monthly maintenance plan; there might be times in which it might be possible in the case of a Feature update maybe or a new install that incorporates a windows.old folder and I'll be watching for that myself. With that said, please consider a monthly maintenance plan that matches what your computer needs are.
--- But please create a system image backup first.
--- I have a monthly maintenance regimen that includes doing that although I use Free up space now that I brought up in post #13.
--- It might have been a good idea for me to mention you could use Disk Cleanup instead and I’m glad you did.

Do you still have the compattelrunner issues which are the subject of this thread?

Apparently, a retail version of Windows 10 is available on a USB stick rather than a disc.
You're right - I forgot that Windows 10 came on a USB stick, not a disc. So yeah, I did install it directly from the retail USB stick. I'm looking at it now as I type this. Retail box.

So far, I think it's been much quieter, but probably because I ran that reg command so it's probably just forcing it closed every time it tries to run again.

As far as how long has it been a problem - it's been running as long as I can remember having Windows 10 installed, which has been over 2 years now - approaching 3. It's always been a pain. I can't say exactly when it started but it's been annoying me for the majority of the time Windows 10 has been installed, if not the whole time.

I wonder if it's worth resetting WU?

Boot in Safe Mode and run script gets around the problem.

I hope you find a total solution.
I know I sound repetitive but please implement a system image backup plan.

@rivre, I thought I'd let you know I just serviced a computer at our senior center and their Free up space now has a total of 6.33GB to clean out.
--- I missed the monthly maintenance regimen I usually do because I was out of town so that 6.33 GB represents 2 months time.

Solution: Disable Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser task

    From https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...7-5276bceeef39 :
    You can disable CompatTelRunner.exe.

    1. Launch Run window by pressing down Windows key and R letter on your keyboard at the same time.
    2. Type taskschd.msc and press Enter or OK.
    3. Now, expand the folders in the given order – Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience. Find a task called Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser (it should be at the top, partially hidden) and right-click on it. Select Disable.

    Try:

    Code:
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\CompatTelRunner.exe" /v Debugger /t REG_SZ /d "%windir%\System32\taskkill.exe" /f
    OK, thanks! Will try.
I learned that it is apparently a feature that re-enables itself and ignores settings, we'll see...

I checked some settings earlier and you are correct. They reverted to default after a windows version upgrade.
