    Problems With Start Up in Windows 10

    I have an issue that occurs when I press the "on" switch for a cold start. The first time, I get the HP logo but no spinning dots. Then if I power down and press on again, I get the HP and spinning dots. Windows 10 starts but much slower than normal. After that, things seem to run normally.

    I tried to do a system image restore, but got a message that said the Recovery Partition needed to be formatted. That didn't sound too good to me.

    I am currently on version 1809 11763.316.

    Will a repair/install correct this problem? If so, can you give me the steps to download the ISO and conduct the repair/install? I did one a while back, but a refresher would certainly help.

    People have resolved this kind of problem by disabling fast startup. Could be worth trying.

    - sorry, which form of restore did you mean, and by what means?

    For reference- details about downloading iso's and performing an in-place upgrade repair install are in the (searchable) Tutorial section. In addition to MS media creation tool (Google it) there is an iso downloader tool in the 3rd post in the thread on Kyhi's boot disk at the top of the Software and Apps section.

    Disk imaging using a 3rd party tool such as Macrium Reflect (free) is recommended here time and again. Even MS has advised 3rd party tools are preferable.

    Most HP computers come with default BIOS UEFI hardware diagnostics that can test Drive and RAM.
    If you had at any time updated the firmware to a newer version there are extensive, component, and loop until failure tests.

    If the computer has more than one disk remove the non-Windows disk for the next step.

    Power on the notebook and repetitively click the F2 key to open the BIOS UEFI diagnostics.
    Perform the available tests.
    Use a camera or smartphone camera to take a picture of the results and post an image into the thread.

    I am a fan of HP laptops and desktops. For the most, I am and have been really satisfied, but they have their faults, too.

    My current HP ProBook 470 G5 laptop for instance, it occasionally acts as you have described. A cold boot, I might have only the HP logo showing for a minute or longer, then suddenly the laptop boots normally.

    My suggestion is to wait. Let the device stay turned on, do not press the power button in at least a minute or two, and see if it finally starts.

    Disabling Fast Startup solved the startup problem. If I enable Fast Startup, the problem returns. This only started after the last update fiasco from Microsoft.

    zbook: Thanks for the reply, but my system isn't that complex. I have not updated the firmware.

    Kari: I have tried leaving it on with just the HP logo for quite a while. Nothing happened.

    Dalchina: I am going to install Macrium Free and use it from now on.

    That's kind of good news- but it's a workaround of course. However there are about 3 other similar recent reports that I've seen.

    Glad to see the problem fixed.

    If you perform preventative maintenance these are some steps you can perform:

    1) Download and install HP Diagnostics Windows: (right upper area of this link)
    HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site

    2) Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows version 1.5.4
    Click system tests > click system extensive test > click run once (run this overnight and check the results in the AM)

    3) If there were any problems detected then run the component tests as needed.

    4) This should test most of the hardware on the computer except for RAM.
    The RAM testing is available using the HP BIOS UEFI diagnostics.

    5) Download and install if not already installed: HP Support Assistant:
    Driver - HP ENVY 17t-j100 Quad Edition CTO Notebook PC | HP® Customer Support

    6) Run the software to find any drivers or BIOS that may need to be updated > update drivers and BIOS

    7) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    8) sfc /scannow
    9) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    10) chkdsk /scan
    11) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

    I do perform preventative maintenance, and thank you zbook for the advice. I just ran Macrium backup, and it reportied bad MFT segments or something like that. Macrium suggested chkdsk /r , and I am going to do that right now. Thanks again ...
