    Video Thumbnails Broken

I have one PC with Windows 10 Home on it that has suddenly stopped displaying video thumbnails. Funny thing is that on other PC's on my network it works just fine. Picture thumbnails work fine but video thumbnails have stopped displaying at all. I have checked the obvious windows settings and also scanned for problems with windows - nothing. As far as I am aware, nothing changed on the PC, this happened in the last month or two. Anyone any clue as to what might be going on?

The problem doesn't seem to be associated with any of these. It has just completely stopped creating thumbnails. I have checked to see if they are enabled in folder view, they are. And indeed, picture thumbnails work fine. It's not just one type of video file, its stopped working for all of them. I have tried deleting the cache, that made no difference. It doesn't matter what size they are set to, it doesn't create any. It used to spend some time creating thumbnails whenever I went in to a folder - it doesn't do that any more. It doesn't even seem to attempt to create any. Version is 1803. The problem only started in the last few months ( can't be sure when ).Incidentally, what is the latest version? It says it's "up to date" and it's 1803, but my other PC's are saying they are 1809.

    Thank you for your reply.

Try creating a new user for test purposes. If you see the same problem then, it's likely a Windows issue. If not, then a user profile one which an upgrade or upgrade repair will likely not fix.

I have that installed. Granted, you would think it should be possible to fix Windows- and maybe it is. For example, you say the build is 1803, so you could -
    - do an in-place upgrade repair install (which keeps all progams and data - using an 1803 iso)
    -
manually upgrade to 1809 by downloading an 1809 iso.

    Bear in mind
    - MS seems to be restricting delivery of 1809 by Windows Update
    - MS does impose restrictions on delivery based on PCs being at potentia risk of experiencing problems - and with specific blocks (listed in the item in the News section about the re-release of 1809
If considering either of these, do, as so often recommended here, make sure you have a current disk image (e,g. Macrium Reflect (free) ).

Thank you for your help, I found the problem albeit not the root cause. For some reason, Windows 10 was updating, but it had missed some major updates. It's last minor update was just a few days back and it insisted it was up to date, but it wasn't. No sign of the major updates. So, I downloaded the Update Manager and updated manually, and poof, it's all working fine now. The video thumbnails are back. Yay.

It's very possible that it was this "restriction" you were talking about but I thought I would try it anyway. At no stage did it complain about updating or say that it wasn't suitable so I just let it do it's stuff.

Sounds as if you upgraded to 1809, which in effect has the same effect as regards repair as an in-place upgrade repair and resets some things back to default and replaces all Windows files.

    Glad that fixed it.
