Stuck in boot loop after 1809 upgrade on Lenovo Y700 laptop

    Hi all,

After upgrading to 1809 from 1803 my laptop is stuck in boot loop. The boot sequence is now - Lenovo logo, blank screen, Lenovo logo (different resolution), blank screen, reboot.

    Here's what I tried -

Windows 10 repair (created now from the new 1809 media tool):
    • System restore - no restore points have been created.
    • Startup Repair - did not work ("couldn't repair your PC"). Log file contains "Failure while setup is in progress".
    • Uninstall updates - unable to uninstall feature update ("we ran into a problem"). Was able to uninstall quality update 3 times but I'm not sure it's doing anything (still not booting).
    • chkdsk /r C: found no bad sectors.
    • sfc /scannow /offbootdir /offwindir found some bad data, but looking at the log it looks like these are just temporary files.
    • bootrec /fixmbr works but bootrec /fixboot prints "Access is denied" (I mounted the EFI partition and ran bcdboot but still got the same error).

    Kyhi’s Rescue Disk:
    • I see my data on the C / system partition, so it doesn't look like the whole disk is corrupted.
    • I tried to enable safe mode by modifying the boot loader with EasyBCD to wait for my input on boot, but when I press F8 and choose safe mode the computer just reboots again.

Any suggestions on what else I can try before doing a clean install?

    Hi Shawna

First thing I would do before I went any further is use Kyhi's recovery disk to safely copy all your data off machine. That would be my first task.

When you say you tried to uninstall updates were you using the advance startup options .... restore to previous build??

Since you have Kyhi's recovery disk you could start Macrium and try its fix for boot.

    https://knowledgebase.macrium.com/di...+boot+problems

Two processes, one for legacy and one for UEFI.

I would also strongly recommend you download and start using a tool like Macrium Reflect. A reliable restore is worth its weight in gold.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

I've seen threads where you use Macrium to copy off existing c:, clean install and then restore your old c: over the clean installed c: .

Not sure at what point your update broke down so this method may be a goose chase if your windows is corrupt.

    Hi Caledon Ken,
Thanks a lot for the response.

    Done.

Yes, although the most recent version looks a little bit different. In the Windows 10 installation media there is an option to uninstall recent quality and feature updates (two options). In the Windows 10 recovery media there is an option to restore to previous build. Tried all that with no success.

Forgot to mention I tried that (same problem after restart).

Could you please elaborate on that? What parts of C: can I copy and later restore over the clean system? For example, I assume any software I had installed cannot be restored this way (but it would be great if it does work).

I did see the update at 91%, so around that point or later.

    Using kyhi boot rescue:
    a) Open disk management > post an image into the thread
(before posting the image please make sure to widen two columns: Status and Volume
(for the Status column view each row and make sure in each row that the contents of the parenthesis are in full view and that none of the letters are cut off)

    b) Open device manager > click view > click show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device

    c) Run the DM and BETA log collectors and post zips into this thread:

Once you have all files backed up you can perform a clean install.
    Alternatively you can troubleshoot.
For example you could build a new boot sector and see if there is any improvement.

Once you've worked through zbook's idea.

Basically you copy all the partitions on the existing disk. One is your c: partition where windows and likely your data lives. You clean install. The clean install will create a c:. You restore, using macrium, your old c: onto the new C:

Really doubt this will work as the update was not complete so there is likely corruption.

    Thanks again for the responses.

I am attaching the bcdedit and diskpart logs along with the screenshots: Logs2.zip.

There are two hard drives, the first one is the M.2 SSD that came with the laptop. The 48 GB partition on the second drive is an unused Linux partition.

Interesting. From disk management shot apart from C: and D: all other partitions are empty, including your EFI partition.

You could likely follow these instruction to populate your already created EFI partition.

When available please post the zip for the log collectors:

As Ken posted there were problems seen with the partitions.

These were the problems seen with drivers:

A lot of those driver issues are likely because he booted off Kyhi's recovery disk.
