Black Screen After Windows 10 Logon (cursor visibile)

    Hello,

Booted PC and get the usual logon screen (visuals all look fine), then I login but only get a black screen with the cursor visible. Looks like there were some big updates over the last few days.

I used 'Reset this PC' tool it took about an hour. I got to the sceen where it said 'Hi. We have some updates for you'" but then it just went to black screen again. I rebooted and logged in - I noticed a little box appear for a while which was to do with setting up personal settings but it hung and was 'not responding'.

My keyboard settings seemed to be auto switched between UK Eng and US Eng in the days before this happened (not sure if it is linked).

    Things I have already tried:

    1: System restore
2: Boot into safe mode (option 4)
    3: Advanced options recovery stuff
4: Ran sfc/scannow in cmd but it failed less than half way through (windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation)
    5: Ran dism /online /cleanupimage /restorehealth - failed because 'specified buffer contains ill-formed data'

Nothing is working. PC worked fine before this for years.

I can get into task manager but it looks so wrong - CPU 0% usage, 25 windows processes only but all doing nothing.

Also tried creating new admin account (still gives same black screen), uninstalling graphics card and modifying/adjusting some items in regedit as suggested by other sites.

For some reason, I cannot launch Windows Explorer from cmd.exe

Execute below commands one at time.

    Code:
    REG ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /v Shell /t REG_SZ /d explorer.exe /f

    Shutdown /r /t 5 /c "System Rebooting"
Let us know if File Explorer started after reboot.

That's usually GPU driver fault. AMD pushed some questionable drivers lately.

Did that and no change. I did get into Control Panel through CMD and that opens Windows Explorer, however when I click on 'If you are having problems with PC, go to seeting and reset it' in CP, it says "explorer.exe. Class not registered". I did successfully put your first line of code in.

I can now get in to view my contents in some form of explorer but have no start menu, background picture etc and CP only shows one program as being installed (monterboard audio thing)

Will do that tomorow, Zbook :)

Just anticpating I will have to do a clean install. I do have my important data saved on different partitions to the Windows install. Can somebody clarify how I avoid overwriting those partitions when do a reinstall and just have it overwrite the Windows partition? I am very noob and have not done this on 10 yet.

Some of the Windows users reported that re-registering the ExplorerFrame.dll file fixed the issue with computer freezes explorer.exe class not registered error message. To perform the same, follow the below resolution steps.

In the elevated command prompt, type regsvr32 ExplorerFrame.dll and press enter.

Once it is done, reboot your computer and check if the issue with explorer.exe class not registered gets fix.
