Access data files from bootable drive in external enclosure

How do I access Word documents on a bootable drive in an external drive enclosure? I'm using both win7 and win10.

If it's an external drive you're accessing from Windows, if that's what you mean, and assuming you haven't got MS Office:

    - run from a USB disk e.g.

Not sure what your underlying scenario actually is.

If it's a windows drive your trying to access from Windows chance's are you won't have permission to access files you would have to change security first

I guess I was not clear. I have Microsoft office 97-2002 installed on a hard drive that uses windows10. The computer the drive is normally connected to has severe problems, and I would like to copy Word documents (.doc) to a flash drive. I put the drive in an external drive enclosure connected to another computer. I can see the drive, but since it is a bootable drive, I cannot get to individual files.

I'm sure others have the same issue, but I have been unable to use suitable terms when searching. Feel free to suggest some.

The files will be owned by a SID from the other pc so you will have to take ownership of the folders to access them use out tool Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Being a bootable drive should not stop you accessing the files when you have it in an external enclosure connected to another PC.

When you say you can 'see' the drive what do you 'see' it in? Open Disk Management. You will see a number of partitions on the drive. The largest one is likely to be the one that was the C: drive on the old PC. This is the one that will have the files you are looking for. In order to see that partition in File Explorer it has to have a drive letter assigned to it. If there is no drive letter for the partition, right-click on it and you can give it one.

Once you can see the partition as a drive letter in File Explorer, the files you want will be in the Users\<a-user-name>\ folder (where <a-user-name> is the name of the user account you used on the old PC) probably in Users\<a-user-name>\Documents or maybe Users\<a-user-name>\Desktop. You may need to take ownership of the folders if you are denied access at first.

There are two potential issues here.

    a. You say the PC the drive was in has problems. If that means the drive of interest is actually corrupt or failing, that could be one source of difficulty.

You can readily check the drive to see if that is so. E.g.
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - extremely good; HD Tune (free) - Health and Error Scan tabs

    b. Permissions problems.
You should be able to use a live boot disk rather than 'normal' Windows and thus not have to be concerned about that. E.g. Kyhi's live boot iso, available from the top of the Software and Apps section here.
