How do I convert voice recordings to text?

The inbuilt voice recorder of Win 10 records my voice via mic and saves it as an audio file .m4a.
Is there a free app to convert those voice recordings to text?

Perhaps- free as in 'built in to Windows'.

    Speech Recognition

    Simply e.g. type
    speech
    into Cortana's search box.

How effectively it will work depends on your speaker and mike configuration, and the quality and speed of your recording.

Try speech recognition by itself first - for example, I can dictate to Wordpad quite accurately.

But don't expect 100% accuracy. Review carefully- use grammar check and spell check to help you.

I tried with just my laptop, no headphones, and whilst dictation was ok, playback and recognition failed, so needs more thought on hardware.

thanks but the built-n speech recog was not really effective as you called out already..may be due to hardware or its own limitations..point is not good to get the job done...lets see if someone can suggest any free 3rd party app for capable of transcribing voice to text.

The question is whether anything will work with your recordings. Clarity, speed, pronunciation, accent - all significant.

I would ask, "does Speech Recognition recognise your speech with a reasonable mike when you dictate directly?"

    "Does Cortana?"

That's a good starting point before trying to play back recordings.
If you can't achieve the above, there's less hope of success with recordings.

    Can you?

Cortana handles pretty well unlike the speech recog...the later fails miserably to handle simple dictation..i would say not even 30% accurate!

Can you complete the simple setup with Speech Recognition?

Noted you are in India, so if you have a non-native style of pronunciation this will add to the difficulty.

And do you have the appropriate speech language set up on your PC?

    Note the options here:

When I used Dragon Naturally Speaking some years ago, there was an extensive training option.

Ok..so I now tried using English (India) as language, no improvements...while cortana understands the voice commands with fair success..the dictation things does a poor job transcribing the audio to text...maybe i will try something 3rd party and see how that fares...thanks for your help with this mate.

How to change Speech recognition language - Microsoft Community

Speech recognition hasn't really changed since Win 7. I think the language used is simply that of the installed Windows. The language pack in settings applies to Cortana, not Speech Recognition.

Therefore to cope with non-native accents, you would need a 3rd party tool. I think Dragon Naturally Speaking was discontinued...
