Hi, I just installed Windows 10 - a few questions

    Hi everyone,

I just installed Windows 10 last night.

Would someone point me to an article that explains some procedures to do after a fresh install? Over on sevenforums, there was a page that talked about antivirus and stuff like that, to do after a clean install.

Any pointers would be great, thanks. I am really looking forward to using this new OS!

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi there.

Windows 10 is a bit more self contained than 7 was. Generally you dont need to do too much to it other than install your favourite software and check for updates. I run the disk cleaning program after an install.

If the pc is the same as it shows in your specs: Dell Precision 7910
I just looked and you have a new BIOS
    Version: A29 ,A29 Release Date: 09 Jan 2019

Might be good to do that for better win10 support.
There is also an Intel ME update
    11.7.0.1035 ,A00 : 14 Dec 2018
The ME is needed for Windows to be able to communicate with your BIOS ACPI stuff, like all selections in Power Options, for example.

That was because Windows 7 didn't have any decent AV of it's own. Something needed to be installed, even if it was just Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows 10 has Defender built in and active by default. These days Defender is comparable in protection to the likes of Avast or AVG.

    Hi,

That is the PC I have yes. Actually, I think I have since updated the BIOS to that newer one, during all the messing around of trying to get Maya/RenderMan working together on Windows 7. The BIOS version would stay the same if I installed Windows 10, am I right?

FYI- RenderMan works in Maya in a far better way compared to the nonsense I was seeing in Windows 7. It is like night and day by comparison! I could not believe the difference in performance. Zero lagging, zero memory spikes, zero freezes. All thanks to Windows 10, so I am glad I made the jump to it.

The Dell drivers page was down last night so I could only install the NVidia driver from the NVidia site. I still need to install the rest of the required drivers. I want to be careful though and not install any rubbish/gimmicky drivers that Dell has on their site. If they are useful, I may do so though!
@Bree - the fact you say defender is the same as AVG/Avast is great to hear. On my Windows 7 setup I used a combo of Avast & Malwarebytes. I have read installing Malwarebytes on 10 is a good idea, so I plan on doing this too.

    Thanks,
    Paul

For drivers, unless you are a pc enthusiast/gamer only graphics drivers are needed, to be updated when you have a discrete graphics card, and maybe realtek(new ones are NOT always better though) but with a clean install of Windows the Realtek EQ and sound effects are missing. .

Other than that Win 10 is really good about drivers..

Have you already gone through everything in the settings app?

Take special care in the privacy section, as if something doesn't have permission, it could affect use of an app.

If you are not going to use the virtual assistant Cortana, you can turn her off too, I did that after a while just because I never really used her, and prefer to use my keyboard & mouse, and doing things myself(to each his/her own).

It can if the OEM implements it.

In the independent test link I gave earlier Defender, Avast and AVG had identical scores for the latest tests (October 2018). Exactly which is top protection each month may change, but Defender ranks up there with the rest of the big names.

Some use Malwarebytes in addition, often just as an on-demand scanner. Personally I uninstalled it a year or so ago as it never found anything

I have however enabled Defender's PUA (aka PUP) protection....
