Programs unable to save files in my documents

Hello, I need help with my Windows machine. I have built my first custom PC, I first installed windows 10 without a key, later I bought a key for Windows 10 Pro and upgraded it.

The problem I have is that some of my software can't work properly, because they are unable to write in some directories.

I noticed this yesterday in two ocassions:

    01. A game Sid Meiers Civilization: I can't save the game. I press the save button, but it then does not appear in the my documents folder, nor in the game itself. Also, every time I open the game, it is like it is opened for the first time, because it clearly cannot save any preferences in that folder.

    02. Software ZBrush: I literally can't open the software, because when I do, I get the errors, first one being:
    Unable to save file C:/Users/Public/Documents/ZBrushData2018/ZBrushScratchDiskPath

And then it is followed by another error:
FILE WRITE ERROR: Sorry, the disk space is critically low. ...

I only have one 2tb SSD drive in my desktop and it is half empty right now.

I tried opening programs as an administrator, also tried messing with sharing options and unchecking read only options for Documents folder, but nothing worked for me.

Also, when I open those locations, for example where the game saves files, it is completely empty, but I can create or modify anything inside it, so it seems like I have the permission to do so, but not when I run the programs itself.

I suspect reinstalling windows might help, but I really dont want to do that, as I would have to reinstall so many things again. Anyone have any ideas please? Thank you

    2 questions first, please.

    1) Where did you obtain the Windows 10 Pro Install Media for your initial installation?

    2) Where did you obtain the Windows Pro key you later used to activate it?

    Thanks.

I downloaded windows 10 install from microsoft website, loaded it to my usb stick.

I bought a key from some online website, can't find an email from them now.

Also worth mentioning, some programs work perfectly and are able to save files in almost the same directories, for example I have another game in Documents/My Games/Rainbow Six - Siege works good and is able to save gamesettings file. But another game in Documents/My Games/Sid Meiers Civilization is unable to save any files there and that folder contains folders, but zero real files.

If you go to Settings>Update and Security>Activation, what do you show as the activation status. Example:

Usually when some (but not all) apps are denied access to folders/files in your Documents it's because Defender Controlled Folder Access is protecting those folders. The solution (as long as you are sure you trust those apps) is to allow them through this ransomware protection. If you have version 1809 then when you try to add an allowed app Defender will list any recently blocked apps. If you have 1803, then you may have to look in Notifications (or the Event Log) to find out which executable may have been blocked.

Since Controlled Folder Access is off by default, you would have had to consciously enabled it. That can be easily checked by referring to this tutorial.

Or the game is not properly activated, or the system is not properly activated. These are all things that can be checked.

    Thanks, guys.

I just remembered that there was an option in my BitDefender for Safe Files, Secured Folders. I turned it off and its fixed now.

Like Defender's controlled folder access, that function is there to protect you from ransomware. If possible, it would be better to whitelist your trusted apps rather than turn it off. At least you now know where the problem came from.
