Windows Explorer thumbnail preview file types

What file types Windows Explorer is capable of showing thumbnail previews of in the latest Windows 10 versions? Today mine is 1809 (17763.195).

I mean all kinds of files: documents, images, videos, etc.—without the need of third-party programs, plug-ins, extensions, etc.

Can someone provide a list or a source where I can find it? TIA.

Generally files that can give a thumbnail preview are associated with an installed program that can work with them. Sample in Pictures and Medium Icons:

Yes, that's correct. But of course Windows must support the thumbnail preview for programs that generate thumbnails.

For example, I see in your second screenshot that PDF files icons are displayed as the default PDF file type icon. But Windows supports PDF files thumbnails, and you have to set it so that Windows can display them. An easy way to do it is by the following setting in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC:

Back to my initial point, I want a list of Windows 10 officially supported file types thumbnails, so I can seek solutions for those Windows does not support.

Without the helper programs, the thumbnails would stay the generic icon. Windows does not have anything built into the code to display a snapshot of a page or of the file, without some help from an outside program that has to be installed.

    Try this program:
Immersive Explorer - A modern file explorer for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7
Gives a different perspective of file management.

I now understand that perfectly but, like I said before in other words, Microsoft must (forgive the pun) let windows open for software makers add stuff to the OS. Otherwise, they wouldn't waste their time and efforts on it. That's what I meant by saying "Windows must support the thumbnail preview".

As to the case in point, one can see how Windows deals with showing thumbnails (or not) here:

I have searched and found some software that help Windows display thumbnail previews for a wider range of file formats:

    FastPictureViewer Codec Pack

    Icaros

    Media Preview

    Pictus
