    Shut Down Issue

    Hi
I have just upgraded my Pavilion DV6 laptop from a standard HDD with windows 7 to a Crucial MX500 SSD and windows 10 (clean install). The installation went smoothly and all the required drivers seems to have installed automatically. The only thing that seems to be a problem is on shutdown and start-up. It displays ‘Shutting down’ and the revolving dots rotate for about 10 seconds, then it seems to lock up showing just a few of the dots but frozen. It remains like this until it shuts down and takes close to 2 minutes. At other times it just goes to a black screen for about 2 minutes.
At startup it displays the windows image and the revolving dots for a couple of seconds then goes to black screen until it opens. Boot time is 90 seconds.

I’d appreciate some advice on this.

    Thanks

    Hi.
I would start by turning OFF Fast Startup and giving it a few *real* shutdowns.
Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    This can make a difference.

Open an Admin Command Prompt and run sfc /scannow

Have you looked on the HP support website to see if there are any drivers specifically for your model? Sometimes Windows generic drivers are not the best for OEM systems. Also check Device Manager for bangs.

I'm sure others will chime in with more ideas.

You can also try turning off hibernation, which will also disable fast startup, this will also delete the hiberfil.sys file taking up space on your SSD:
    Code:
    powercfg -h off

Look at Event Viewer and Reliability History for clues. You might need to do a boot trace - search the forum for how to do this.

    Hi Simrick,

    Thanks for your reply.

Turning off Fast Startup had no effect. I also ran sfc /scannow which showed no violations.

I will act on your advice and post the same question to the HP forum if I get no joy here.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks. I've had a look at the Event Viewer and it shows quite a few errors and a critical notification but like you say I need to have a look to see what they all actually mean

    Hi @milky bar kid

    We can troubleshoot that using Windows Performance Toolkit;

    1. Open a command line as an Administrator (Run As Administrator)
    2. Type the following command in the command line Windows: cd %programfiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit
    3. Type the following command to start recording the boot trace: wpr -start GeneralProfile -start CPU -onoffscenario shutdown -onoffresultspath c:\wpr -numiterations 1 -filemode
    4. Compress the .ETL file generated under the C:\WPR path (very important)
    5. Upload the boot trace file on Dropbox or on https://www.transfernow.net/en/

I'll try to analyze your trace file and give you a feedback.
