Think I need to reinstall Win Ten

Gaming PC with 1080ti Graphics Card
4.5 GHz quad Core
3Tb Hard Drive
3Tb Seagate external drive
Windows 10 (not pre installed, kosher new usb stick and product key, bought separately from the machine)


Had it for a year and it worked fine until it didn't.

One day it booted up and when I'd entered my Password, gave me a blank screen

My bluetooth devices (keyboard, mouse ) are not connected and I can only access it from a wired mouse and keyboard.

I can get into ctrl.alt.delete and see task manager but don't really know what I'm looking at.

I managed to get into the Bios and changed the boot option to read from the USB drive and tried booting from my USB drive with my purchased Windows Ten usb stick, but nowt happens.

Do I need to do to reinstall Win Ten from scratch (most of my Data is on my External Drive and I can reinstall my software later).

Someone told me I need to create a Boot Disk but couldn't give me any help past that.

Welcome to the forum. First thing boot again get to task manager select run from top menu enter explorer see if it then loads. Second if you need to do a clean install goto media creation tool on the web and download the latest ISO free from ms let it create a USB or DVD boot from that and try a repair first

As samuria says, If you can open Task Manager by using Ctrl+Alt+Del then you should try 'File > Run new task', type explorer.exe and click OK. You should then get a desktop to make further work easier. It may not be your desktop though, you may have been logged in with a temporary profile.

Can you boot into safe mode and create a new account from there to see if you have a corrupted profile. You could try a repair install before a clean install since a clean install requires you to reinstall all your programs.

I suggest you schedule regular backups e.g. Macrium Reflect Free which would enable you recover from a backup in such situations in a few minutes.

In such cases the Explorer is already running but waits for something to complete before proceeding. Use CTR+ALT+DEL, open Task Manager, go to details. Find Explorer, terminate the process. Now go to File->Run New Task and type "Explorer" (without the quotes) and click OK to load Explorer. Now you should see the Dekstop. Upgrade your drivers and see if the issue is fixed. Next step is to see which applications load at startup (from Task Manager, Startup tab) and disable them. Last step is to search for spywares with Superantispyware or Malwarebytes Antimalware and remove them. If I find too many spywares with one application, I then use another to remove anything didn't detected by the first.

As your PC is already running Win 10, it has a digital license- no other needed (unless you wished to upgrade from Home to Pro, say).

Activation should be automatic.

The procedure includes deleting the existing Windows partitions (step 13): you clean install to unallocated space.

There's a link under 'Here's how' to create a bootable disk. That will be build 1809.


As a matter of routine, it would be wise to check your disk - Hard Disk Sentinel (trial/commercial) is my preferred option - great text description of problems. There are others of course.

The one you have is probably an earlier build.

How can you give yourself an easy way to recover from many problems?
Use disk imaging routinely as we so often urge users to do - e.g. Macrium Reflet (free) + large external disk for images (compressed copies of used parts of selected partitions).

My problem is that I can't get access to me hard drive apart from accessing Task manager and the advice I've been given which would restore my drive from there hasn't worked.

So I have the following to work with :-

Win 10 USB stick and product key.
A Dell laptop with Win ten bundle to which I have complete access and which is working fine.
An empty, formatted 16GB USB stick.

....can u please give me a start on where I go from here ?

Did that and nothing happened, it just stayed in Task Manager with the explorer link disappeared.
