Had you tried to boot into the computer's Windows advanced recovery menu?
Or had you tried to boot into the Windows recovery environment on a Windows 10 iso?

    Were there any restore points?
See if you can perform a system restore.
Start with the oldest system restore point and keep repeating as needed to the most recent restore point

Attempt a startup repair > indicate whether it creates a srttrail.txt file

If you were able to perform a reset save files (reinstall drivers and applications) would that be a viable fix?

That only works if no other instance of explorer.exe is running. If one is, normally I'd then expect an explorer window to appear, but you don't see that.

Anyway, try task manager, Details. Scroll down and look for any instance of explorer.exe. End any such process. Then try the above (post #9).

See if you see anything different- but in your case, I suspect for whatever reason you ma not.
Thanks for that, I will give it another go.

How do I stop the filenames jumping up and down the list of open files and folders please.

It took me nearly an hour before I managed to highlight the explorer.exe without it vanishing from my screen before I could 'harpoon' it.

    Thanx

BTW, when you say "Explorer", are you talking about the file management utility or the web browser ?

    1) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)

    2) There are log collectors used in another forum.
Please run both the DM and BETA log collectors and post zips into this thread:

Easy. Task manager, Details, click on the Name heading to organise by name.

Could you edit your previous post and delete the huge amount of white space? I though something had gone wrong and tried refreshing the page. Thanks.

There must be a time limit within which you can edit (my latest post has it on the footer) but it isn't there on the post with the huge amount of empty space, should I get in touch with a Mod for help, do you think...

Yes - thanks very much that works (I've just tried it on my working laptop).

I shall try it for real shortly when I make my next attack on my other recalcitrant beast.......

Watch this space (and thanx for your time, BTW).

    Yes, will do.

I don't know what most of the specs you mention mean and haven't, of course, got access to me machine to find out, so I'll do it as soon as I can.

As for #2, I don't understand what you said, I'm afraid, so I'll have to see what i can find out from Google.

    Thanx

In Ten forums we use a log collectors to troubleshoot computers having BSOD.
Use the logs collectors to collect logs on the problematic computer and post them into the thread for troubleshooting:
Run both DM and BETA log collectors and post zips into this thread.
BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums

To get an inventory of specs you can download and install: Speecy: Download Speccy | Find your computer specs, free!

It will be easier to get help when the information is in the "My Computer" section
