What is "Windows Remediation Service" and how do I disable it?

A few days ago I noticed that my PC no longer goes to sleep based on inactivity (although I can manually put it to sleep). Today I ran "powercfg -requests" and saw

Sedlauncher is apparently part of Windows Remediation Service and, from scattered reports on the web, think it may have been part of KB4023057 that I installed about 2 weeks ago.

I see that Windows Remediation Service is a real service that I could (at least temporarily) disable but I don't know what this service does other than (apparently) keep sleepy computers awake. Is it safe to disable? And if I disable it, will it stay disabled, or does Microsoft re-enable it automatically?

I certainly don't consider the installation of Windows updates on Microsoft's schedule a valid reason to keep my PC awake.

This does seem to come from KB4023057, pushed out to builds of W10 prior to 1809. From the first
post of: KB4023057 Update to Windows 10 for update reliability - December 6

"Only certain builds of Windows 10, versions 1507, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, and 1803 require this update. Devices that are running those builds automatically get the update downloaded and installed through Windows Update."

I have been running 1809 for a little over a month, and cannot find any sign of KB4023057 or sedlauncher.exe

on my system drive.

Hmm. I apparently asked the wrong question in this thread. I've succeeded in disabling Windows Remediation Service but something is still setting running sedlauncher.exe to set SleepDeferralConditionsMet. It doesn't get set right after booting, but it gets set.

I take it upgrading to v1809 is not an option? The release notes indicated the purpose of the sleep deferral was to enable successful updates, and that user sleep settings would be respected, but it does not appear to be the case. There could also be a scheduled task lurking somewhere that starts sedlauncher.exe.

You might also try uninstalling KB4023057, then using wushowhide.diagcab to hide the offensive KB update.

I will do that upgrade eventually but this sleep issue is not sufficient reason.

I suspect you are right that some lurking task - scheduled or not - is invoking sedlauncher.exe. Whatever invokes it has not done so since a reboot over 4 hours ago.

For some reason I cannot uninstall it (or am trying the wrong technique).

Try opening Control Panel, and click on 'uninstall a program'. KB4023057 should be listed there; if not, click on 'view installed updates' in the upper left corner.

I already (sort of) did what (I think) you said but had no luck.

In Control Panel I opened "Programs and Features". It lists installed programs but not fixes so that may not be what you meant. In the left panel of the "Programs and Features" panel I clicked on "View installed updates". KB4023057 is not listed but it lists 3 patches that were installed on the same day as KB4023057.



Trying another path, I went to Settings > Update & Security > View update history


But to make things more confusing, Windows Update shows

so I really don't know what is going on.

And with my adding this information I've created a forbidden "Double post" on the forum. I'll direct the other thread to this one.

It appears as if Windows does not see KB4023057 as installed on your machine. For at least some users, it showed up as in installed program in the Control Panel - Uninstall a Program list, where one could uninstall by right-click and selecting 'uninstall' from the short context menu.

Since it looks as if it is not installed, we are both puzzled as to what is launching sedlauncher.exe and blocking your sleep settings!
