Can magnets cause tablet to turn off?

I am using a portfolio sleeve for the Dell Venue 11 Pro ( 5130) and never had a problem when the tablet is inserted into the sleeve. I purchased another DVP 11 Pro (7140 ) and tried to use the same portfolio sleeve and I ran into problem of the tablet not starting after I press the start button . However as soon as I remove the tablet from the sleeve it starts to boot up. The reverse is also true ie after the tablet is up and running , inserting into the sleeve immediately turns it off. After some experimenting , I think the problem seems to be top left side of the tablet any part of the sleeve touching it seems to turn the tablet off. There are magnetic catches to hold the cover on. Can these be affecting the tablet operation ? It does not seem to affect the old 5130 tablet. Any ideas ? Tks

Yes, the Surface like the iPad sense a magnet to place the device into standby mode, so that it conserves battery power. It is possible that the older Surface could not sense the magnets to place it into standby.

This means I need to remove the magnets embedded into the sleeve and use something to attach the cover ?

I wouldn't. They are in there to make sure the device goes into a standby session when the cover is closed, so that it does not overheat and also saves battery life.

Problem solved by removing magnets. I always put my tab to sleep before closing the cover.
However I may try to replace the magnets near the top of the cover .
