Any Cure Yet for Desktop Icons Moving, Changing, Resizing themselves?

I read through a long thread from last year here: Desktop icons keep rearranging
That ended about where it started: No cure. I was struck by how many people have this issue of Icons set on the desktop, which move around after restarts or other interruptions, are inconsistent in size, or disappear [onto a non-existent phantom desktop?].

Here on the edge of 2019, is there a cure yet, other than 3rd Party apps like "Desktop OK"? I had not seen this problem since Windows NT days, but now just in the last week I've seen it twice, on 2 NEW laptops with clean Windows 10 installs "from scratch".

    any hope?

As you'll have read, some people see this happen, others never do. I don't, fortunately. And you'll know it's a problem that's annoyed some Windows users through several editions of Windows.

So it still seems a matter of picking the most suitable 3rd party program if you're affected.

Right click on an empty space on the desktop. Go to personalize, select themes, click on desktop icons settings, uncheck the box that says "Allow themes to change desktop icons".

Allow or Prevent Themes to Change Desktop Icons in Windows 10

    Step 3: Profit

Thank you D; i'll give that a shot and see if we get lucky, though there is no theme installed, that may not be a deterrent to the mischief! The user blames Google
I have, at the moment, 7 systems with Win 10 running, and none in my possession manifest the issue. But 2 in a row, new clean systems, one of which I installed myself.... uncanny. both intel gpu's

I was skeptical at first, but it has worked on many of my customer's computers that were having the same issue.

A couple of years ago it was quite common for my icons to be totally rearranged when switching between accounts. I don't have this problem since recent updates but I still get some minor rearrangement of the icons.

I now use DesktopOK recommended by someone on the forum. It's a simple program which saves the icon positions per user. Run the program and save the icon layout then exit. If the icons get messed up then run the program, restore the icons using your selected saved file and exit.

    Remember Windows Desktop Settings:
    -------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes people face a problem in Windows when Windows doesn't remember their customization settings on Desktop and taskbar, like icons positions, toolbars positions, taskbar position, etc. So if you are also facing such problem, then this tutorial will help you in fixing the issue:

    1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It will open Registry Editor.

    2. Now check for a DWORD "NoSaveSettings" in right-side pane under following keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Program Manager\Restrictions

    3. Once you find the DWORD value, delete it and restart your system. It will solve your problem and Windows will remember your desktop settings. In my case NoSaveSettings wasn't present in two Keys, so I had to manually create a new DWORD 32:
    NoSaveSettings
    Left the value at O

Click OK, arrange your Icons, Folder View settings etc the way you want it.
Save your work, reboot the PC & hopefully you should enjoy a tidy Desktop & Folders opening in the style you prefer.

The only key that exists on my system is

    Code:
    >reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
        ForceActiveDesktopOn REG_DWORD 0x0
        NoActiveDesktop REG_DWORD 0x1
        NoActiveDesktopChanges REG_DWORD 0x1
        NoRecentDocsHistory REG_DWORD 0x0
and as you see there is no NoSaveSettings. The other keys don't exist.
I never have a problem with my icons moving around.

Hi Ztruker, with me this key had a NoSaveSetting DWORD value:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

I manually added Policies, Explorer -->
    NoSaveSetting DWORD key:
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    This key had a
NoSaveSetting DWORD value but I can't remember if I added it or if it was present already:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

This last key had no Program Manager & Restrictions key, so I added those + NoSaveSetting DWORD key:
    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Program Manager\Restrictions

Desklock v1.2. Been using it since way back. Once you lock your desktop down the icons will not move. Also Desktop Icon Save & Restore has been around since 2001 and still works.
