Guess I'd ask how old is the OP's Son and what he'll be using the computer for ?

If he was a gamer he would not be using a 9 year old HP. My thoughts.

Brand is irrelevant mostly. I have Lenovo, HP, Dell and Nextbook. All good.

Get a late gen I7 3.4Ghz or better CPU
    Get a good GPU
Get a minimum of 16GB of RAM
Get a 500GB or larger SSD for OS boot, consider a 1TB or 2TB 7200RPM spinner as a storage drive
Get the best display you can afford as this is what you end up looking at. Highly recommend one that can be connected via HDMI. I have a 27" Samsung curved display and absolutely love it.
    Get a good power supply.

Until I got My 12 year old daughter a iPhone two Months ago, she spent quite a lot of time playing Minecraft, Animal Jam and quite a few other games on My Wife's 8+ Year old HP P6654Y. Now it does have a Athlon 2x4 650, 2x4 GB Crucial Ballistic RAM and a Gigabyte 5450c 512 MB GPU upgrade. My 16 Year old Son also stopped Gaming when he turned 15 and discovered Girls and SnapChat. He also stays on his phone and only uses a Laptop with an Intel i3 6th Gen to do School homework. Should he decide to start Gaming again or work with something like AutoCAD, the Dozer 8150 with 16 GB of RAM and Powercolor 6970 2 GB card couldn't hang So in my Case I really don't have a need to upgrade especially on a ATT 10 Mbps (when it works) connection.

Building your own desktop using a quiet PC case is a good option to choose the best price / performance components - but you need some expertise.

My Dell laptop has been fine and well supported by Dell. I also used Dell computers at work without problems.
