Create new folder on desktop when right click new does not work

Desktop computer with Windows10 Pro.
I already have one post going, but I need to create new folders on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop and click on new, it basically freezes up and eventually refreshes the desktop. I googled the problem and tried a couple suggestions, including messing with the registry (not a problem, but it did not work). I also tried widows restore for two attempts, but no luck. Any help will be appreciated. If there is another way to get new folders on the desktop, I would like to know how. Thanks

Grab a copy of this. It is portable.

Explorer++ - A small and fast file manager for Windows

Extract the files and run the program. Navigate to desktop and right click and see if you can create a new folder.

Maybe this is the cause of that:

right-click menu wait time

As I mentioned in a comment on Reddit some time ago, in some cases the system freezes and in others it just takes several seconds for that menu to appear.

Run a system file check.

in an Admin command prompt sfc /scannow

Thank you for the Explorer tip. I extracted it, opened it & right clicked on desktop, but problem is still there. I will keep the program, it seems to offer quite a bit. Again, thanks for the tip. I'll keep looking. Dick R.

When that program works - it points to a shell extension problem. However since it did not work the problem must be elsewhere.

If you want to you can scan with UVK and upload the log. Maybe there's a wayward context menu entry.

Some users suggest:

Open Control Panel then click File Explorer Options. Look for the option in top of the message sub-window Open the File explorer to–in that box you should select “This PC” apply it and do not select “quick Access.” Maybe you can create a New Folder now.

Other than that try this reg fix:

NewFolderfix.reg

Download file to desktop then right click and choose "Merge"

Reboot and test.

Thanks, hopefully that will work. Got that right click, New flyout menu stall error happening on my rig as well!

If running sfc /scannow doesn't fix the issue, then I would try the following:

Create a new account and see if the problem is due to a corrupt profile in the old account
Recover from last working backup
Repair install if you don't have a recovery image
Clean install & reinstall programs

Create new folder on desktop when right click new does not work
