    Restoring Windows10

    Hi,
I'm new here and I hope I have this question in the correct area. First off. I have 2 windows 10 in my house. one is almost 4 yrs old and the other is a week old. The newer win10 had some serious issues and Windows10 itself need to be reinstalled. We recently had a blizzard that knocked the power out while both computers were on. the new one got fried and the old one survived. The new one seems to turn on ok but is stuck in some kind of loop while trying to start windows. The sad part the files to it didn't get saved before the disaster stuck.
The new windows10 is almost the same kind of computer as the older one except it has 8gigs of memory. The older HP has only 6 gigs of memory but it also has it's restore files.

My question is could I use the restore files from the older HP to restore the new HP or is there a problem since one is 6gig's of memory and the other is 8gigs?

The older one is a 550-153W HP windows10 with 1k gigs hard drive and 6gigs memory
The new one is a 590-p0053W HP windows10 with 1k hard drive and 8gigs memory

PS...and to make it even worse. the new one was plugged into a surge protector (apparently didn't protect very well) and the old one that survived wasn't plugged into nothing other than just a simple cheap $10 power strip. a very old power strip to boot.

Hi, I guess you have not been using disk imaging routinely as we so often urge users to do - e.g. Macrium reflect (free) + external disks for disk image files.

Had you been doing so, this would have let you restore your PCs to a previous working state quite quickly and probably without technical help.

You've now discovered how vulnerable PCs are to being randomly powered off.

You would be wise to check the disks before proceeding: to do this, please create a live boot disk using Kyhi's iso, available from the top of the Software and Apps section here.
You can use the instructions from Option 2 here as a guide:
    Redirect Notice
    but use Kyhi's iso.

As you will see- this includes a lot of programs. HD Tune (Health tab and Error scan) will let yo do this.

This disk could also be useful to help you recover data from the disk(s) in the PCs to a USB disk, for example.

Considering the new HP PC - one option - if feasible as it's not booting- would be a factory reset, assuming the disk is not damaged. (Normally a factory reset is started when the PC can boot normally).

HP PCs - Performing a System Recovery (Windows 10) | HPĀ® Customer Support
    - find
Recovery when Windows 10 does not start correctly

As it's new, you can ring HP to ask for support under warranty, hopefully, or use HP's support forum.

A different approach: You could simply clean install Windows 10 on your new PC. iso's are freely downloadable; create a bootable medium and perform a clean install, after having checked the disk and recovered any data as above.

Or you can use Microsoft's media creation tool (just search) and that will create a build 1809 Windows 10 bootable medium ready for use (e.g. flash drive).

My question is could I use the restore files from the older HP to restore the new HP or is there a problem since one is 6gig's of memory and the other is 8gigs?
I'm afraid I don't know what sort of 'restore files' you are referring to. Do you mean... system restore...factory recovery partition... some external backup files... a system image... a clone... How were these created?

Trying to use files from one PC to restore the other would not be a useful approach. See e.g. the clean install option above.

the new one isn't mine. it belongs to someone else. I'm going to assume I can't use my files to restore the other one because of the difference in memory size?

Hello Oldxpuser and welcome to the forums. Dalchina has given you some great advice. The question I would have is did the power outage corrupt some system files or did it damage some hardware components. If the files were corrupted, dalchina's advice would enable you to recover any personal files.

The difference in the amount of memory won't matter. But I don't think I would try to use your files on someone else's computer. Plus you can't just transfer files. You would need a system image to restore anyway.

I don't know if anything got damaged. I know windows got fried, that much i do know and HP will not honor our warranty. They said its our fault and wants to charge almost the same price as what another new computer would cost. We took it to a place thats supposed to be HP citified, got it back 2 days ago and it was running very sluggish and slow. I was on it last night and other than starting slow it seemed to be ok. then a upgrade came through for HP itself and I shut it down and when the owner of the computer got home and turned it on a blue screen came up and said something about windows repair failed or something. now its stuck in start up. the power flashes on and off and the HP logo comes up then it shuts down then comes up and keeps going through that same loop now

Start by running disk checks as I suggested. You don't actually know what's happened to the hardware- if anything.

how do i create a new boot disc when that windows files are fried? it cant get past the logo screen. it comes up then powers down, then up again and down again and keeps doing it non stop. im not a tech guru like you guy's. my best advice to the other person is throw that c away and go buy another one. im tried of dealing with this and their wasting their money. its already cost them a small fortune and its still FRIED. not even 2 weeks old and cant get past the HP logo.

Thanks anyway but im am tired of dealing with this. just pitch that dang piece of junk and go get another one.

You'd have to use someone else's PC.

If you haven't taken due precautions (disk imaging) you will land yourself in difficulty. Disks fail- what would you do when your disk fails?

I appreciate you have tried to protect against power surges, but if you're not willing or able to act on advice, there's really no point posting here... it does cost us our time, given for free.

You said you have another similar PC that's working. Use that to make a recovery drive. You can boot from a recovery drive to repair this PC. If you include system files when you make the recovery drive you could even clean install Windows from it. Being made on another HP the system files would include the HP utilities and branding.
