In the pic all of the pics or snips are shwon as just a white rectangle but I want it to show the content of the actual pic or snip instead so I can see at a glance which one I want to say download for example .
I have searched the forum tutorials and Googled what I want to do but cannot find any way of doing this. So is there a way of changing those rectangles to pictures that I have saved on my desktop.
Any help greatly appreciated

Saving actual files to the Desktop frequently doesn't pick up the file association necessary to show other than a generic icon. Maybe changing the name to include the extension [which by default is hidden by Windows] such as .jpg or .png, whatever they should be, will correct the problem. I prefer showing the extensions as I probably do more work with file organization that others. And I don't care for the customizations that remove the small arrow from the icons that signify they are shortcuts to the actual .exe/executable file, can result in the wrong file being deleted which in turn can result in having to reinstall the program.
Look in File Explorer [renamed from Windows Explorer in earlier versions] and the View tab, Options then its View tab to change the default, I remove the mark on the Hide extensions item.
In File Explorer then Desktop you should be able to change the size of the icons, arrangement, etc.
Thanks Berton but nothing seems to work now not even deleting the icon from the desktop.
I have gut feeling that this install is now broken and not just because it is now build 1809.
I might just grab another drive and reinstall the 10 again and see what happens. Just when I was getting quite familiar with 10 and now this shambles.

Hello Shawn the BAT files does nothing and the Option 2 when I copy paste the third command it kills the taskbar leaving me with ni command prompt.
I will leave it and as I said in another thread i will swap in a clean drive and reinstall and try to keep build 1809 from installing. But thanks for your help anyway.

It should work in 1809. You want to turn this....
...into this.
Which I switched by ticking or unticking the box in File Explorer View options for 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. See the one that didn't change? That is a zero-length file so there's no way to make thummbnail. It's a solid icon. just like yours. The one above it is translucent, even as an icon, because it contains a valid image. That suggests that it's the mechanism for generating thumbnails that is broken for you.
I'd make a system image with something like Macrium before going any further. As you have only just been upgraded, you still have the option to roll back to 1803. Do so and make another Macrium image, now you'll have two to play with.
As you have another disk you can swap in, you could restore an image and try an in-place repair install on the 1809 upgrade with the ISO, or try a manual upgrade of the 1803. As I showed above, 1809 should work.

Thanks Bree I have already swapped in another drive that I installed 10 on before now and all the pics are back so I am guessing it is either 09 or Open Shell playing games because I couldn't even delete the rectangles or whatever you call them. I think I had trouble with this drive too in that it wouldn't let me unpin the apps from the Start screen and why I changed to Open Shell.
Anyway I have unpinned them again and will see what happens on a reboot
I don't use Open Shell, so I'd suspect that....
Well I ma back on the affecte drive and I shall try uninstalling open Shell because I had a few things to do to change the Start button 7 orb as well so maybe something along the way has had something to cause the icon set up to be wrecked to cause this problem??
