I've just been looking at my shiny new 1809 - upgraded from 1709.

Unlike @Bree, this time, Windows update failed- without any error message at all. PC did restart and run through some new build config screens, but on logging on I was back to 1709. Logs were totally obscure. Manual upgrade failed similarly.

Eventually i ran the WU troubleshooter and reset Windows update (twice), and 1809 installed (manually).

Odd, as Windows update had been running perfectly normally.

Qttabbar, colours were ok and I'd uninstalled Aeroglass for the upgrade- new version works fine. Can set defaults ok, although I found the Photos option for default was greyed out- I had to reset defaults to MS defaults, then set them.

Had a warning Speccy was incompatible and would be removed - it isn't and it wasn't.

As discussed elsewhere, the Regidleback scheduled task is ineffective as we knew.

Sorry to hear getting 1809 has been so traumatic for you. Personally I never bother trying windows update, even when WU says it has found a Features Update. I always go straight to an in-place upgrade using an ISO made by the MCT. Also, all my 1809 upgrades were from 1803. Of course, I have system images to go back to if it all goes pear-shaped but so far I haven't needed them.

I try not to customise my installs with 3rd-party apps, none had anything like Open Shell installed or the WUMT. The AV is pure Defender. Although I've heavily customised my Start tiles and have added shortcuts of my own to the All Apps list, basically it's still a standard MS install underneath. Perhaps that's the secret of my success?

    Hi,
Yeah I haven't used my 10 with office on it in so long don't know what it has on it
I think it has 1803 on it
Which maybe that one might install @dalchina ?

Fortunately it wasn't as traumatic as falling off my bike when hitting a Russian-only speaking woman dressed in a red coat who walked out in front of me between 2 in a long line of parked cars, looking vaguely in entirely the wrong direction.

No other traffic around. I was tempted to think perhaps Putin has agents everywhere. A week later still a couple of minor injuries, not to mention having to restitch the shoulder seam of my jacket.

Upgrading only took 3 or 4 attempts - via Windows Update then via a downloaded iso.

Sadly the completely non-indicative multiple failures in the log files just confused, so I tried the 'obvious' - Windows Update reset and troubleshooter, following the advice of a MVP in a thread found when researching one error number- has basically said 'don't bother looking at the log files'...!

After that it was easy. Open Shell, Qttabbar are not significant in this.

Aeroglass, of all the many programs I have installed, is the only one that matters, and that has to change version with each build, and be uninstalled before upgrading.

So far, no obvious problems- and indeed better than upgrading to 1709 when I encountered problems because my 2 disks are numbered 0,1 where 1 is my SSD - so this time Advanced Startup options (Recovery partition) are fine. Not even an extra Recovery partition.

I've lost track of what the known remaining quirks of 1809 are... I've mostly worked through a list I had and not found much of significance.

What should I look out for? Noted the brightness/power options missing as observed by others.

I upgraded to 1809 on the Oct. 2nd release. Personally I was pleasently surprised, finding 1809 one of the most well 'finished off' features updates to date, with few if any loose ends or bugs. It's unfortunate MS missed spotting 'The Big One' .

The long-delayed (due to an as yet unexplained major blocking issue discovered at the last minute) release of 1803 to 'get something out' before the last day of April was one of the worst IMHO. The initial release of 1803 had a lot of 'Insider' stuff left in place, particularly the 'Feedback frequency' settings which were greyed out and still said 'managed by the Insiders program'. That wasn't fixed until 17134.107 after which MS re-released an updated ISO for the MCT using that build.

I only know of a couple of obscure/minor bugs in 1809. This one is not fixed yet. The other was fixed in 17763.194.

The brightness slider in Control Panel Power options has always been a duplicate of the one in Settings > System > Display. Removing it from Control Panel could just be part of the general migration from CP and into Settings.

Thanks- agreed the slider in the CP is trivial. I was thinking rather of these settings- don't know why they removed this completely.. although not a vital feature of course.

That said, I think there may be new options in Settings, Battery. (I quite like the 'acrylic' translucent left pane in Settings- goes well with Aeroglass and other translucent features)

(And just for interest, System restore was turned off after the upgrade.. I think you said you've not seen this)

Options like these are not usually removed, rather they are hidden. @Brink has a number of tutorials for adding or removing other such settings with .reg files. cf. Add or Remove System cooling policy from Power Options in Windows | Tutorials Using that tutorial as a guide for where to look, I've compared the before and after registry on one machine I upgraded (Macrium viBoot is a wonderful thing) but cannot spot what has changed.

No, I haven't and I can't explain why (just lucky?). I have a little list of other things that do (usually) get reset to defaults.

    • Turned on Fast Start up (I like it turned off)
    • Turned on auto Defrag for all drives (I just auto defrag C:)
    • Reset default association for all image file types to Photos (I like it set for Windows Photo Viewer)
    • Turned back on Password Protected Sharing (I had it turned off)
    • Turned off details pane in File Explorer (I had a details pane)
    • File copy '% complete' window reset to 'fewer details'
    • Task Manager reset to 'fewer details'

    • Turned on Fast Start up (I like it turned off) - mine was unchanged - hibernation disabled via Powercfg
    • Turned on auto Defrag for all drives (I just auto defrag C:) - never changed default
    • Reset default association for all image file types to Photos (I like it set for Windows Photo Viewer) - Photos was greyed out oddly; pdf default was reset to Edge
    • Turned back on Password Protected Sharing (I had it turned off)
    • Turned off details pane in File Explorer (I had a details pane) - no change noted
    • File copy '% complete' window reset to 'fewer details' - don't take special note
    • Task Manager reset to 'fewer details' - ditto

I had already tried a Brink reg file which I thought might add those settings back, but no change.
