LOL; every major Feature update will never be perfectly 'fixed'. It has to be compatible with 100's of millions of devices with many millions of hardware and software configurations. That said, I haven't encountered anything major since I installed on Day One on 4 computers except the Downloads folder being deleted on one.
If not working, one can always roll back or, ideally, mount a recent full image backup, easily enough. Just MHO

The update is actually pretty good. I enjoyed it from day 1. Unfortunate for the people with the bugs.

I have been running 1809 since it came down in WU on Oct.02, 2018 and running smooth with Pro version on my desktop and Home version on laptop. Other than the normal bug in Windows as usual I can't complain. Others have not been so lucky though

You're exactly describing my situation. I hope that microsoft learned something from 1809, because i'm not resistant to bugs.

I finally received 1809 via automatic update on December 7th. MS stated, once bugs were fixed, that the roll out would be very slow and of course it was. I never use manual updates only use automatic. Thus far since receiving 1809 everything has worked perfectly for me.

Thanks, I have a number of support computers that I advised to wait for background update to 1809. Good to see that auto update is rolling out more broadly now and with very few complaints.

I always manually check for updates, because for me it doesn't work all the time. Always getting a list of updates when checking. Gladly, 1809 worked out for me.

MS generally recommends waiting for automatic updates unless user is has an internet connection with a data limit or a particularly slow connection. One must also remember, Windows os's are used by millions all over the world and there is no way that every computer in the world could receive automatic roll outs at the same time, this is why they advise you wait for the automatic roll out. Be patient, you WILL receive it. Since I have a good internet connection with no data limits I've always used automatic update and have yet to have not received an update. It might not be the same day as people I know in other countries or other parts of the US but I do receive them.
Have I had any updates fail? Of course. But I just wait and sooner or later I receive them without difficulty.

The MS recommendation is mainly to ensure you don't get the Features Update until MS is confident it will be successful on your particular hardware. Every Features Update has had blocks in place for particular machines that were known to have issues, the blocks only being lifted once the issues had been resolved. The only difference with 1809 is that MS are now openly listing the known blocking issues.

Downloading the ISO and upgrading manually bypasses the checks for these blocks, hence it is only recommended for 'advanced' users (Microsoft's word, not mine). Personally I've used the Media Creation Tool to download an ISO and do the upgrade myself for every Features Update since 1511. I've never had a Features Update fail.

As a general rule, I wait 4-5 month prior to allowing the feature update. Except this time the 1803 had been applied at the end of September and I forget to change the update group policy. A week later, 1809 was auto installed and promptly broke my system. Restoring from Macrium image didn't take long and guess what I did first? Yup, the group policy changes...
