I had the same problem.. And i was totally annoyed by this bug..
Like an hour ago i stumbled over here.. Downloaded the bat file. Which didnt work..
But then i remembered that in win7 i once installed a transformation pack which also added its own start menu..
So i searched for it and i came accross "Classic shell" its similar to win7 start and looks alot polished..
Rebooted twice before posting and i can confirm that it still works like a charm..
    Hope this helps

I've been having these same problems with start menu and tray icons not responding too. Using the Power Shell script 10devices_default.bat fixes the problem for about 2 or 3 days then the problem occurs again. I'm a little confused about "resetting OS to factory defaults".

I got tired of using the script every 2 days so I took the big jump and did a "Refresh" procedure as listed in the tutorials here. I lost my 3rd party programs that I had installed but all personal data remained intact. I then reinstalled my 3rd party programs. Computer has now been working fine for about 5 days.
Hey Arnie, before "resetting OS to factory defaults" did you have a clean install of Windows 10 or an upgrade from an earlier operating system? I'm asking because using the Win10 Reset OS feature should bring you to a similar state as if cleanly installed on new hardware in the first place. I've used it on many machines when necessary, and it's the cure-all for most things win10, but it also requires reinstalling all other software and settings which can sometimes be difficult if not impossible.

But if you had a clean windows install prior (new PC purchased with it installed or wiped out your old OS and installed from disk) I'd like to know because that means this problem isn't limited to upgraded instances.

There are a boat-load of threads on here about the same/similar problem, and I have seen both upgrades and clean installs complaining.

I have one W8.1>W10 upgrade I'm working on, and have appeared to resolve the problem with a clean boot. So, once we have taken the time to turn things back on, we will (hopefully) identify the offending program/driver/shell.

A clean boot is reported frequently to temporarily alleviate the issue, but apparently it always comes back. For me the reboot didn't even provide temporary relief. In the end it was the full combo of running the bat file, running thebpowershell script, removing the folder, and rebooting that resolved it, keeping me from having to do a full reset OS on that users computer. (I described the full sequence a few notes back in this same thread if it would be helpful to you.)

what ive found is that, in general, most egregious issues such as lock ups, freezes, inability to shut down, missing menus, mercy, mare related to an upgraded OS and often applications that are brought forward in that configuration that aren't really compatible with Windows 10. There are still issues, it's a buggy OS, but not nearly so buggy as when the OS is upgraded.

I tried using Tweaking.com's cleaner but it didn't work. Same issue where Start works for a little while, then fails, as does Search. Seems to be tied to my Calendar in lower right. When one doesn't work, neither does the other. Since time seems to be a factor, maybe it's a memory leak or something in the programming? I've had to put all my programs on my desktop just to access them now. Microsoft, get your SHIT together!!!

I had upgraded my laptop from Windows 7. So far things are working fine.

This problem is a nightmare. I work at a computer repair shop, currently have two computers with this problem. I tried all the common fixes that people say (like the ones in post 94), but nothing is working.

The start menu does work in a new user account, but from what I hear people say, it will stop working again after a while.

Microsoft really needs to fix this in the next build of Windows 10.

I've been working on this issue for a few days without luck, but the info provided by bushwick2002 has helped me make some headway.

After renamaing the Database folder in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer my Start Menu immediately began to function again, though was empty except for the Power button and All Apps which also contained no items.

The Database folder was regenerated almost immediately, and I noticed the vedatamodel.edb file was of different size. I suspect this is the exact file causing issues.

After this I rebooted to see if it changed things, but the start menu was still empty.

I then ran the powershel script to reinstall the windows packages. Previously this had generated tons of errors in red, but this time it was successful (only 1 error).

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Now all that's missing from the start menu are my 3rd party applications.

    Hope this helps out some.

    --edit--
I later found http://superuser.com/questions/97080...ar-not-working and a post suggested deleting everything EXCEPT the vedatamodel.edb file.

I have had this problem a few times and I think it is related to fast start up which can be disabled in control panel -> power options -> choose what the power buttons do (left side). When my start button refuses to respond I go to the task manager -> details tab -> find explorer -> right click -> Analyse wait chain -> where I find that explorer is hanging, waiting for a response from an instance of svchost.exe with a PID (Process ID). I have then been killing that PID of svchost which causes windows to shut down with a semi dramatic blue screen, but when windows restarts I have normal operations.

The question is how can a problematic instance of svchost persist from one start up to the next? Well this is where I think fast start up comes in. To speed up the boot process it is saving a load of information to hard disk when you shut down, this is then loaded back in, unfortunately along with some problems. Too early to be sure that this is the answer but so far so good, and killing the instance of svchost has been the quickest and most reliable means of getting the start menu back for me so far.

Yes, but I have 2 systems with this problem, both with Fast Startup turned off.
