    Found this and it worked for me:

    Open powershell with admin privileges
    Copy and paste this line at the PS prompt:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

    You might have to wait a second for it to appear, when it does hit enter and wait until the prompt returns from PS

    Don't know how long it will last but it's working now.....
    how long did this take? It has been running for 15 minutes? When doing this did it have some red writing at the bottom and yellow att the top?

    It shouldn’t take too long to run (although I am using an SSD, maybe it takes longer on a standard HD?) Not that it mattered for me. In looking around on other forums someone suggested a program called Classic Shell. This emulates the start button features of Windows 7 and worked for me, but certain Win 10 features don’t come up in the all apps view. Also, the search bar, MS Edge, volume control & message panel are still not working. I’m not very OS literate, but is the problem with the shell?

    I’m wondering too if other people were trying to do what I was trying to do when everything went in the toilet. As part of the overbearing security features of Win 10, I was not able to save anything (docs, pics) to my C drive. I was trying to change ownership of the drive when this happened. It also seems to be related to one of the recent updates. I also get random messages about the recycling bin being corrupt, and restore points not being able to “restore”. It was nice of MS to make Win 10 free, but what good does it do if it doesn’t work? I no longer see the option to revert back to Win 7, and if I do a refresh, all my programs will need to be re-installed.

    One more odd thing - I've noticed since this all began that my C:\ drive (240GB SSD) has gone from having about 119GB free to having only 14GB free. The only program I installed was the Classic Shell. I even uninstalled a bunch of smaller programs I wasn't using anymore, and moved a bunch of pictures & videos to a secondary HD.

    I followed the above. I didn't have to reboot or anything. So far it is working fine.:)

    I tried this and got nothing -- but on the Microsoft Community board, I discovered a reference to NirSoft ShellExView and the fact that shell extensions on some older apps could be incompatible with Windows 10. The recommendation was to go through and check every non-Microsoft shell extension by disabling them with this really easy to use free app. The kicker was someone replying saying that Memeo LifeAgent Explorer was their culprit. I run Memeo... I disabled the extension and everything works!:) It's certainly something to try.

    I’m wondering if we need to take this beyond the start button not working. In addition, anything Windows 10 related seems to also be non-functioning. Edge, Cortana, the volume control & message center on the toolbar, Windows Solitaire Suite just to name a few. Are others having issue with not being able to use these features as well? Is it actually a problem with Windows shell?

    Yes, this had occurred for me as well until I tried the following fix: http://answers.microsoft.com/thread/...c-a4a3939195ea or here
    All Windows apps/functions are useless until applying the fix
