    Hi all,
I ran the powershell script after my start menu button and notifications button quit working on me only a week ago. Once I ran this I only got two red errors that stated I had a higher package installed already. I let it complete it work and rebooted my system once it was done.

After the reboot, my start menu and notification buttons started working. However there is a problem now. I have lost some apps and they crash on start. Calc, photo viewer, MS store ect are not working. I will attach photos of what I am seeing. I'm not sure what happened as I followed the information on how to run the powershell script.

I'm not sure why this happened. Any ideas?!

Reboot itself brings temporary fix in most cases. Regarding script you used, I would not recommend to try it on 1511 TH2, I've tried it myself cca 2 months ago and ended up with exactly the same mess. Resolved by resetting OS to factory defaults..

I have experienced this after messing with Windows services and packages via dism.
Undoing changes did bring the functionality back.

I have attached a batch file to reset all services (and optionally device drivers) to defaults.
Coupled with the solution posted above by flhthemi, should fix most cases.

This brought my computer back to LIFE!!! Thank you!

[Resolved by resetting OS to factory defaults..[/QUOTE]

I've been having these same problems with start menu and tray icons not responding too. Using the Power Shell script 10devices_default.bat fixes the problem for about 2 or 3 days then the problem occurs again. I'm a little confused about "resetting OS to factory defaults". I've tried reading the various options available and don't want to lose my personal data or added third party apps. Could you clarify this procedure for me?

I'm surprised that Microsoft hasn't come forward with some suggestions or fixes for this problem. Surely they read this forum??? I have removed AVG antivirus and am only using Windows Defender. I have a feeling that some third party program may be causing this. I have three other computers working fine with no problems.

This is getting beyond a joke now tbh, this bug has been in Windows 10 since release and after patch it still here. AM sick to death having to restart to get my start menu back working.

Resolved by resetting OS to factory defaults..
After trying the Powershell script, as I said before the menu button came back, and lasted for about a week. Then last night it quit working again.

So I decided to use system restore to go back to a restore point in jan of this year. Well that was the WRONG thing to do it seems. It completed and restarted only to tell me there was a problem keeping windows from starting. I tried everything! I even tried to use my USB Recovery drive, and it would never detect it. So I ended up having to reset the OS to factory defaults, which I didn't want to do. I am just glad that it worked, and that windows is working again without problems so far.

Going to try the following below later on today and post the results. Found these on another forum. It work for a few people.

    1. Login to your current profile
    2. Press Win+X, and select "Command Prompt (Admin)"
    3. Enter the following commands, in this order
      1. net user "TempAdmin1" "password1" /add
      2. net user "TempAdmin2" "password2" /add
      3. net localgroup administrators "TempAdmin2" /add

    4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, click Sign Out
    5. Login to the "TempAdmin1" account using password "password1"
    6. Logout, and then login to the "TempAdmin2" account, using "password2" (note: you must fully sign out, not just switch users)
    7. Open File Explorer, select View, then check the box marked "Hidden Items"
    8. Navigate to C:\Users\TempAdmin1\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer (click "continue" to gain access when prompted)
    9. Right Click the folder "Database" & Copy
    10. Now, navigate to the same folder for your damaged profile (C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Local\TileDataLayer)
    11. Right click "Database", and rename to "Database.BAD"
    12. Right click empty area in the folder, and select Paste
    13. Reboot, then sign back in with your original profile.

I tried every option in this post and the only thing that worked is the above. My issue was as follows:

    1. Click on start button = nothing happened, would get a spinning circle and then nothing
    2. Edge & Microsoft Store Icons disappeared from taskbar.

After fix, start button works but Edge & Microsoft Store icon still missing although placing the cursor over them you'd get fly over help that told you what should be there. Need to Right Click remove and then add back.

My antivirus doesn't like this script... And the author is banned on this forum.
    I won't risk.

I got tired of using the script every 2 days so I took the big jump and did a "Refresh" procedure as listed in the tutorials here. I lost my 3rd party programs that I had installed but all personal data remained intact. I then reinstalled my 3rd party programs. Computer has now been working fine for about 5 days.
