Just use Classic Shell and select the option "Hide App Shortcuts"

Start10 or Classic Shell resolves that problem
I get the best of both worlds with StartIsBack++.
I can choose a Windows 7 style classic menu (but much better) or the Windows 10 menu with a single click or keyboard shortcut.

And it costs next to nothing.

With Open Shell/Classic Shell the Win 10 menu is likewise available via a configurable hotkey combo.

Win 7-like or add on XP features (columns cascading across screen or scrolling columns); configurable search.

Once I got control of the Start Menu I became a big fan. I put frequent flyer apps in my Taskbar and less used in Start. I absolutely never seek out apps anywhere else.

I configure Classic Shell so mouse hover over the Start button opens CS and left click opens the Windows 10 menu.

That's the nice thing about Classic/Open Shell - it's configurable to suit you. That includes its search- which of apps/files/web/start menu you want to search.

You'll be lucky if Classic Shell survives. I am sure you know it's was abandoned a year ago. I realise that someone is trying to preserve it. How's it going?

What I was trying to say with StartIsBack++ is you don't even need keyboard shortcuts to switch between the two. It's just a mouse click.

Open Shell is its currently maintained replacement. As you may know, there's a huge thread on the forum related to that.

In case it doesn't, does Startisback++ offer expanding columns across the screen? Put another way, how does it handle very large categorised (folders and subfolders) start menus?

You can uninstall or unpin all the icons so you just have the left menu. You could also group icons in folders to organise them better.

Apparently thee is an app called Open Shell in a thread but I cannot find it - anyone know where it is please?

Right now I just keep the Start menu trimmed down by either unpinning the default apps or uninstalling them.
