Getting rid of a BIOS password

I bought a new HP 470 G5 Probook and while I was setting it up I came across how to add a password and thinking it would be the password for Windows 10 I entered one .

Now when I boot the machine I have to enter this password plus the PIN number for 10 - is there anyone who can let me know how I can stop the first password from actuating?? I am sure it was or must have been set in the BIOS when I first ran the machine??

    Thanks in advance.

I don't have an HP, but I presume that it's in the BIOS setup.

"Notebooks manufactured after mid-2011: Turn off the computer, press the power button, and then repeatedly press the Esc key until the Startup Menu opens. Press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup Utility."

The password is in the Security area. You ought to be able to remove it there.

Fortunately, you know the password, so you shouldn't need any hacks.

    Good luck.

The conventional method when the BIOS/CMOS password is unknown has been to remove all power from the computer, let set for awhile or press the On|Off button to drain residual power from the motherboard then remove the small battery [about quarter size], wait a bit then put it all back and start up, may have to reset a few things, usually date and time. It works with Desktops but getting to the battery on Notebooks can take some work in disassembling to find/get to it. A lot of BIOSes have capability of 2 passwords, one to just start the computer and the other to make changes in settings, the first is separate from the second.

Ok Berton I might have to try what Bob has suggested becaue to get to the CMOS battery mate I have to disassemble the whle laptop and it is held togeteher with all sorts of different screws crossheads Torx etc etc and as I paid a fair bi for it I shall just have to try the simple method.

The thing is the password holds up the OS loading thats why I just want it to skip straight to it as it has a PIN for security anyway.

But thanks to you both I really do appreciate it.

The mention of the PIN suggests it's the Windows password getting in the way. The PIN can't be assigned until after having set up the password, usually during the install of Windows. If using only a Local Account the password can be done away with. I haven't tried with the Microsoft Account I have on some computers, prefer the password/PIN arrangement on those.

Well the solution was easier than I thought it would be on boot up all one has to do (with this model - 470 G5 Probook) is to push F10 then F7 and choose change password and if you don't want one enter the current one and then on the next screen leave the password box empty and hit Enter - password gone!

But thanks to you all for your help!!

This is marked solved but I would like to add a little info that might save somebody some trouble latter on. Removing the CMOS / BIOS battery on a laptop will "not" erase the BIOS password. It will on a desktop PC but won't do the same on a laptop. They use an EEPROM to store that info on laptops. It's electronically erasable and does not lose its data when power is removed. It has to be written to to change the contents. Desktop PC's for the most part use an EPROM to store that data and that needs the battery to maintain what is stored in it. All the (cmos) battery really does on a laptop is power the RTC. Real Time Clock.
