Win10 keeps compressing C drive files (new and old). Cannot stop it.

How big is the drive and how much free space do you have?

Starts with my post, I see

Yes, on one machine that I upgraded to 1809 the upgrade did turn on compactos. But I think I should point out that it was JUST the OS that was compacted. None of the other folders were compressed as is the case for the OP, just the OS.

It may even have been a sensible thing to do. Setup may have ".... determined that it is beneficial for this system". That would be expected for a tablet with a 32/64GB SSD. I was just surprised to see it with 150+ GB still free on the HDD. Probably the MS algorithm found that time saved by reading less data was more than the time taken to uncompress it on the fly, but MS don't document how this is determined.
    Hi Bree,

As in my case (many folders instead of just OS compressed), would you also support the decompressing of the files using the comandprompt and the Compactos function?

    Hi Porthos,

My drive is about 200 gb with about 10 gb free space atm.

Could it be that if things were uncompressed, you'd have too much data on the drive?

According to what he has posted, he has 5% of the available space remaining on the drive. If he were to look at My PC, the bar would be bright red. Not good. He could not un-compress if he wanted to. Nowhere to go. Has the issue of the multiple 11GB JPG files been addressed? According to the pic in post #1, they were being created one after the other, until there was no more room to create them, and it stopped (apparently). OP cannot display the JPG pic, but maybe a screenshot of the properties tab would give some clue.

There is the issue. Windows will try to compress and make space for the upcomining feature update.

    Get a bigger drive.

That is too little headroom to work with, may be compressing automatically. When you open This PC, is C highlighted in Red ?

Yeah, kinda what I was thinking, TC. I can just see it being uncompressed and the data sliding off the end of the drive with nowhere else to go.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you for being this invested in helping!

Indeed, currently I'm running low on space, however, before the compression thing I had at least 15 gb free (I believe, as the c Drive was sometimes red at, however, after this compression event, the space has only further been reduced...)

I cannot understand why Windows would compress these images to such huge sizes (and a ot of them at that) as some images in different parts of the Drive are not affected by this phenomenon.

Screenshot of properties tab of an 10 gb image:
Win10 keeps compressing C drive files (new and old). Cannot stop it.-details-10gb-image.png

    Screenshot of Advanced properties:
Win10 keeps compressing C drive files (new and old). Cannot stop it.-details-10gb-image-2.png

Screenshot of normal accessible image files in a different folde ron the C drive:
Win10 keeps compressing C drive files (new and old). Cannot stop it.-normal-image-properties-c-drive.png

I am now afraid indeed that there might be some repercussions if I would try to decompress the drive...
However, as mentioned before, I doubt that the compression was a result of insufficient space (rather, it is what caused it now, I suppose)

I think that uncompressed, should at the very least be better since these images are just plain confusing. The very fact that not all images on the laptop are unopenable is also making it hard to figure out what is going on. Could these huge image files be a result from a problem different from the compression issue?

In my case Setup during the upgrade from 1803 to 1809 made a reasoned decision that a compact OS would be beneficial based to the relative speeds of the i7 processor and the HDD - it just didn't tell me it was doing that. Nothing else was compressed. Setup always make a decision on this whether it's a clean install or an upgrade (and never tells you what it is) based on the size of the drive mainly. Speed of drive/processor are also taken into account, apparently.

    Your case is quite different....

That is very low on free space, and don't forget some of your folders are compressed at the moment. You may not have enough free space to decompress them all. As for running compactos from the command prompt, I wouldn't try to decompress the OS until you have sorted out what is eating up all your space. At the moment there may not be enough space to decompress the OS. The performance will not be noticeably different with a compact OS, so leave that for last.

I get that the compression is not necessarily a bad thing, however, not being able to open JPG files is quite frustrating and I cannot help but think that the recent mass-compression of folders and the appearance of these 10 gb image files are somehow linked.

In addition, the free space on my C drive is fluctuating constantly. At the time of writing this post, I only had 3 gb left, yet barely 10 minutes later it has turned into 15 gb. I cannot help but think Windows is doing all kinds of stuff but it ain't working out yet.
