So there are lots of unicode characters that Windows will allow you to use in your file and folder names. However, how does Windows determine how they're sorted? Take the following example of a huge number of folders named with different characters:
How exactly is Windows deciding how to sort these? It seems arbitrary to me. Can anybody tell me exactly what Windows is doing here?
Maybe it follows a Unicode character structure of some sort......, or not.
Sorting with Unicode is complicated.
Each Unicode character has been assigned a specific character value that is universal with all locales. Sorting generally follows the character value but that isn't always the case. Each locale has it's own rules regarding character order that may differ from the numeric value. Fortunately application developers don't normally have to deal with this as there are system functions that take care of the messy details.
