    New codenames for the releases!

On some websites in the media some have stated that Microsoft will be implementing new codenames for Windows 10 instead of codenames like 19H1 which will be apparently be something like Vibranium etc. Has Microsoft confirmed this officially? Or shall I just assume at the moment that its fake news?

It's not fake news. It's something you could call an educated guess, or maybe a convincing rumour told by reliable sources.

Mary Jo Foley for instance is a globally known IT writer withy a remarkably good reputation, and known good contacts within Microsoft. She wrote an article five weeks ago on ZDNet titled What comes after Windows 10 19H1? Vanadium.

    An extract of that article:

Earlier this year, Microsoft management split the Windows division in half, moving Windows engineering into the same group as Azure engineering. It was only a matter of time until Windows and Azure would start sharing the same codenaming scheme, right?

The April 2019 release of Windows client, codenamed Windows 10 19H1, is not using the Azure naming convention. But the release after 19H1 -- due around October 2019 or so -- will, my sources say.

The Azure team uses the elements for codenames. The current Azure codename for the 19H1 deliverables is "Titanium," (Ti) I hear, but the Windows client team didn't end up using that, as they'd already started employing internally and externally "19H1."

I fully believe this to be true, something that will happen starting by version 1909 released end of next year.

And after that, Microsoft will start using the names of major cities worldwide. You know, like Cairo or Chicago.

    Why not?

Why the exclamation point in "New codenames for the releases!" ???

Is it surprising or otherwise noteworthy that a company should decide to give names to its products?
