Cannot add LOCATIONS to my LIBRARIES due to endless VERIFYING...

Hello,

New W10 user here, still learning/busy with the installing processes and procedures.
Not easy...
What goes wrong (and went ok in W7) is: attaching various locations to my various libraries: movies, my own videos, mail, my musicbee collection etc.
If I right-click on the library the properties box opens, with an empty box and by clicking ADD i should be able to add the appropriate folder - or more than one.
But...
Everytime I try to do that W10 starts a never-ending search: Verfifying Location > 'Checking to see if this location is indexed'. My most recent add-attempt is now already verifying for 2,5hours.
I have checked the Windows Search service - and it says it is working/indexing.
But... even after I stopped it, the same VERIFYING LOCATION action started. And neverended again...

So?
What is wrong?
And what is the solution?

Hi, I assume you have just installed Windows or added a lot of data in indexed locations, else indexing would not be under way.

When it works normally, indexing backs off (stops using resources) if there is quite a small amount of other activity.

You can see this working by inspecting Indexing Options and seeing the number of items indexed increasing. You can also check that the appropriate locations are being indexed (should be relatively small by default). Note that if you remove certain default locations you can break the ability to search Settings, for example.

I've not heard of what you've described so far.

Do you mean you are trying to include folders in a default library?

(Rather than trying to change the Location of a library?)

Hello Dalchina,
Thanks for your fast reply. At the moment I cannot do much: went up early to catch a flight, far away from my pc. Home in 2 days again. Then a more detailed reply. I feel your help is very effective.
For now: the main problem seems to be that I added a new system disk for W10 in my pc. The old stuff including many external harddisks is still there. For installation all my programs I still need to start W7 to read/copy all settings. I assume that W10 search is now endlessly busy to index tons of existing items.
As to libraries: W10 has different ones than W7. In W7 I created quite a number of my own libraries for easy navigation to my stuff. W10 has 4 or 5 default libraries - and I am still struggling to put the right stuff in the right library. Assistance welcome. When I am back in town again. I will let you know. Thanks

Hi, you may wish to exclude disks other than C: initially if you are having problems with indexing. That you are suggests something is amiss.

This could be some form of corruption- run
chkdsk X: /SCAN
on each disk /partition

Indexing should be a background task that causes no noticeable overhead.

Have you changed any of the default options related to indexing?

Can you confirm you
a. did a clean install of Win 10
b. only have one bootable disk installed in your PC

Libraries:
I don't use the default libraries at all - why? They are full of folders created by programs I've installed! So I think of them as 'their' libraries.

My personal data is on a different disk- I find it best to separate data from the OS for maintenance purposes as far as reasonable.

Hello Dal,
Just back from my short trip. Did not have much time yet to test what your suggestions could do.
I just tried to add a folder to a private library again. Same result: verifying forever...

UPDATE: LAST TWO WORDS ARE NOT TRUE - SEE MY PS AT THE END OF THIS POST.

I had assumed/hoped that during my absence (with pc running) Windows Search would have indexed a lot. Maybe - but apparently not enough...

Well, I admit: it does have a HUGE JOB to index...
This is my situation:

I recently upgraded my PC with an extra SSD disk and more memory: from 8 to 16 now.
I installed Windows 10 on the new SSD - but kept Windows 7 active (for the time being) on my 'old C-System' drive during the (apparenly long) transition period. I keep swapping between the new systems: installing on W10 and testing it, but swapping to W7 if I need an example of my old settings - or if W10 does not have a certain program running yet.
Apart from my pc with 3 internal disks (now) I have 7 EXTERNAL HARDDISKS attached - mostly 1TB, 1 has 2TB, 1 has 3 TB. If you need to index that ALL, i surely believe it takes time.

You suggested chkdsk scans of all disks. At the moment I cannot do that because I first want to see the outcome of the newest attempt to include a folder in a library.
After that I will chkdsk all disks - but I do not expect much trouble there. Recently I have chkdskd them all, one by one, just before migrating.

You suggested I should limit the Windows Search range, by excluding certains folders/disks. How do I do that?
And will it be effective in all cases? Example: If I want to include disk X-MYMOVIES then I assume that disk MUST be included in a Windows Search first.

This is all for the moment. More experiments to come.
Tired and sleepy, so more later - after our weekend guests have left.

Just after I had sent this post and wanted to go to bed, I saw that this time the verifying process had completed during the time it took me to write this post... Rather fast...
But... NOW it is the saving process that takes forever or a bit shorter. Let's see tomorrow morning. And then let's see what happens when I add more library locations... Tomorrow and later... Zzzzzzz.....

This is what you use to decide what is to be indexed.

Be careful not to remove things you should keep. Initially I suggest you do no more than ensure nothing on any other partition or disk than C: is being indexed.

Posting a screenshot like that may be useful. Has indexing completed, as shown in my screenshot?

Windows Search would have indexed a lot. Maybe - but apparently not enough...

Indexing on a good system with no file system problems should never be noticeable to the user.

It would be interesting to see a screenshot of the task manager when you are experiencing this problem.

I would also recommend you don't have a Win 7 bootable disk in as well, if that's what you've done. Win 10 only - simplify. At this point I'd suggest you disconnect any disks not essential whilst resolving this- it sounds as if you have some sort of complicated setup.

Hello again, DAL,

No progress, so far.
• Searched and found the Indexing Options
• Then an everlasting message popped up: 'Waiting for Indexing Status'
• Could not limit any search, because no checkbox list became available to in/exclude certain disks/folders.

In the meantime: I continued to add certain folders to my personal libraries.
Always looooooooong 'veryfing indexes' processes. But after they finally complete the folder can be added. Then I click SAVE and a new looooooooooooooooong process starts.
For sure: this is not how it should be.

Need to scan disk by disk but do not expect much from that. Postpone it because I am still installing/adjusting too many programs/settings to be interrupted by long chkdsk jobs. But will do ASAP.

Any new idea?

Indexing Options is in the Control Panel e.g. via Windows key + S, Indexing Options
Post a screenshot when you get there. If you can't, something more is wrong.

Simplify your system as far as you can.

Run (from an admin command or Powershell prompt)
SFC /SCANNOW
Post the summary result (not the whole CBS.log).
