i did the whole disabled microphone thing and it beeped multiple times throughout the night. process monitor was no help because when i woke up to the beep sound i rushed to see what process monitor said but it wasn't even loaded anymore. i used reliability history and it said process monitor crashed less than an hour after i left it loaded for the night.

not using process monitor anymore. pretty sure it sucked all the memory from windows and caused extreme instability that lasted almost a half an hour. is there an alternative to it?

Process Explorer does not "suck" any memory from windows, nor causes instability. Sounds like there are deeper issues with your Windows install.

all i know is that i've tried process monitor twice in the last 12 hours and it's crashed twice. second time i had a severe instability problem along with a message saying windows ran out of memory. i've not had that happen ever before i started to use process monitor. i just thought since it's dealing with thousands of processes a second that it would take up a lot of memory.

It is crashing because of your windows install or a hardware issue (Overheating). As for the loud beeping, it can be anything. If it is waking you up at night, shut the machine off.

okay i had process monitor running while the computer beeped. i was unfortunately in the bathtub at the time so i couldn't run to the computer. i stopped the monitoring and did a search for anything with the word audio in it. there are a ton of audiodg.exe so that can't be the cause of the beeping. that's it. nothing else audio related.

Well, anybody who has followed this forum (and its sister fora) for very long might have suggested that outcome.
This forum is a goldmine! And I suspect the configurations represented on this forum is far wider than those available to the official Microsoft testers and developers. Lots of knowledge here.

i can't believe i didn't think of this before. i muted system sounds in sound mixer. wasn't expecting it to work. was gone almost 4 hours with total recorder on record starting only with a sound that's made. got home and total recorder didn't record anything. and yes i've used it in the past (that's how i got the sound file in the attachment to this post) and it's successfully captured the beep and only the beep. i'm not calling this case closed until i leave my computer on all night and see if it beeps ever. 4 hours is way to long without a beep but i'll know for sure if it goes for over 8 hours without a single beep.

i'm crossing my fingers. who knew that the solution could be so simple.

all night long and not a single beep. i muted system sounds in volume mixer which sounds bad but i have system sounds set to none in the control panel so i'm not missing anything other than that annoying loud and piercing beep. though it makes me wonder what the source of the beep is if it's coming from system sounds. thanks for all the helpful suggestions even though i'm the one that figured it out.
