How to set different values for screen timeout and screen lock?

I am doing some more testing with the screensaver / screenlock.

So there it is. It does not work. The higher value in registry does not supercede the screen-saver value. If I set the screensaver to 5 minutes, that is what the screenlock becomes as well regardless of what the

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System InactivityTimeoutSecs
value is set to.

The instructions are not correct, the FAQ is broken. It does not work. At least on my system.

Any other ideas?

So given screensavers are irrelevant for a LCD monitor and apparently do not save any power versus not being run at all, the only thing that does save power is the sleep mode for the display. I shall run an experiment, set it to 10 min and keep the test value of 3600 in the registry and see which one locks it, the 10 min or the 60 min one.

So here we go:

I set the Power & Sleep "when plugged in, turn off monitor after 1 minute"

and the screensaver has been set to 60 minutes. I tried to set it to a higher value but apparently it cannot be set to value higher than 60 minutes because that is what the Registry value is set to.

Nothing. The 1 minute Power&Sleep setting is not working. It does not turn on. I hit "OK" on it and nothing.

Whoops, I did some more testing, for some reason, the "OK" did not take. Now it is working. It is powering off and not locking.
I set the monitor sleep value when plugged in just to 1 minute and all other values to 60. Like the screen saver. I tried setting the screen saver to some high value that will never engage because it's impossible to turn off, if you turn off the screen saver, you turn off the power saving feature too. I tried 120 mins for the screensaver and defaulted to 1 minute. So I finally set it to 60, which is the same as the Registry hack above and it worked.

All monitors power down. They take a second or two to power back on, a bit slower than waking up from the screensaver, which is almost instantenous, but the thing with screensaver is, it saves zero wattage, the monitor apparently burns the same watts whether the screensaver is engaged or not. That's how I understood it.

So, right now, I am cautiously optimistic and will try setting the 'screen timeout' to a more reasonable value like 20 minutes and if things work they way I think they will work, the monitors will power off, the power on without a password, which will only engage if the 1-hour mark is reached.

I did this yesterday already an the only issue I ran into was two of the external monitors refused to wake up. After doing this overnight, in the morning. It worked in the evening. So I will leave the machine all all night and see what happens.

BTW, when the power back on, the screen looks like the screenlock screen. And instead of Alt-control-Delete, you just have to hit escape to go back to desktop or whatever you were doing when it shut down.
