Going to W10, need advice on laptop.

I'm in a new state and don't know many people that have similiar skills that's why I'm on a lot of forums like this on & the W7 forums. Always got sound advice from them.

I'm really open to that. I'll take any suggestions from you guys.

For one, the "local experts" don't know what they are talking about. Windows 10 can run on almost anything. Your i5 is fine. You do NOT need an i7 to run WIn10. They are trying to con you into spending money when you don't have to. Your laptop sounds just fine.

Windows 10 works remarkably well on older hardware, usually running better than their original Win7 did. Click 'My Computers' below my post to see a couple of examples. If there were space for more than two systems I could list my i7 laptop too, but it's not noticeably faster than the Pentium of my System One in general use (browsing etc.). It's only when running CPU-intensive tasks like video processing/editing that it shows its speed advantage.

That can be upgraded to 32-bit W10 Pro. Once it has activated you will get a digital license for W10 Pro stored on Microsoft's activation servers and linked to the unique hardware ID of the PC.

You cannot upgrade a 32-bit OS to 64-bit. If you wanted 64-bit W10 Pro you would have to do a clean install afterwards. Skip entering a key when asked and it will activate automatically from the digital license. A digital license it is valid for both 32/64 bits, but only for one edition - in your case it will be Pro.

For 64-bits, 2GB RAM is Microsoft's minimum requirement, but in practice 4GB is the bare minimum that's practical, 8GB (or more) would be preferred. For 32-bits 1GB is the MS minimum spec, 2GB is sufficient and 4GB is the maximum possible usable RAM for a 32-bit OS.

If you want to try, make a system image with something like Macrium Reflect Free first. Then you can restore your W7 system and carry on from where it left off, if you want.

I have Win10 64-bit on an older i3 with 6GB RAM, does just fine.
