Going to W10, need advice on laptop.

Going to W 10, need advice on laptop.

Currently I have an MSI 17" laptop with 256GB ssd w?W7 Pro 32 bit. And it has been the best PC Ive owned in 30 yr.Still get several hr on orig batt. My computing is done "ABOVE the CODE & HDWE." HVerave been an info mgr, analyzer for 50 yr. Not a techie; But understand a fair amt of it. Price (Wife), functionality, value, speed are what I'm looking for.

Below is a starting point for a W10 laptop. You guys are the experts, so have a field day but use the KISS method. Think of a 10 yr old Honda Civic or a 60 yr old Craftsman screwdriver, (if anyone is old enough to remember the old Sears). Currently driving a 2018 Subaru Legacy, Great in NJ snow.

    15 or 17" monitor.
    256 SSD, w/2 or 3 partitions
    3-4 usb 3 ports
    HDMI port.
    Ethernet port
    SSD card reader

Familiar with MS opr syst from DOS 2? or 3.2, DR DOS thru W7. So I will be needing some help.

Why not upgrade what you have now to Windows 10?

    upgrade current pc

    NavyLCDR,

You bring up a very good point. I thought of that too BUT:

I have asked several local experts & they said I could run in to problems as the older I5 chip will be too slow. Said I needed I7.

I'm in a new state and don't know many people that have similiar skills that's why I'm on a lot of forums like this on & the W7 forums. Always got sound advice from them.

I'm really open to that. I'll take any suggestions from you guys.

The "experts" lied to you. I5 is perfectly fine to run Windows 10. Were the experts at a computer store trying to sell you an upgrade? I would recommend you make a backup image of your current Windows 7 installation using Macrium Refect Free. Also be sure to create the Macrium Recovery USB flash drive as well:
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

    Then go for the upgrade.

Dell and HP, at least, are still selling I3 retail computers with Windows 10. I'm running Windows 10 on Intel Atom computers with 32GB "SSD"s and 2 GB memory!

For one, the "local experts" don't know what they are talking about. Windows 10 can run on almost anything. Your i5 is fine. You do NOT need an i7 to run WIn10. They are trying to con you into spending money when you don't have to. Your laptop sounds just fine.

Windows 10 works remarkably well on older hardware, usually running better than their original Win7 did. Click 'My Computers' below my post to see a couple of examples. If there were space for more than two systems I could list my i7 laptop too, but it's not noticeably faster than the Pentium of my System One in general use (browsing etc.). It's only when running CPU-intensive tasks like video processing/editing that it shows its speed advantage.

Currently I have an MSI 17" laptop with 256GB ssd w?W7 Pro 32 bit.
That can be upgraded to 32-bit W10 Pro. Once it has activated you will get a digital license for W10 Pro stored on Microsoft's activation servers and linked to the unique hardware ID of the PC.

You cannot upgrade a 32-bit OS to 64-bit. If you wanted 64-bit W10 Pro you would have to do a clean install afterwards. Skip entering a key when asked and it will activate automatically from the digital license. A digital license it is valid for both 32/64 bits, but only for one edition - in your case it will be Pro.

For 64-bits, 2GB RAM is Microsoft's minimum requirement, but in practice 4GB is the bare minimum that's practical, 8GB (or more) would be preferred. For 32-bits 1GB is the MS minimum spec, 2GB is sufficient and 4GB is the maximum possible usable RAM for a 32-bit OS.

If you want to try, make a system image with something like Macrium Reflect Free first. Then you can restore your W7 system and carry on from where it left off, if you want.
