Win 10 update from 1803 to 1809 is a mess.

Earlier today Windows 10 updated itself from v1803 to v1809 and ever since that time, I am struggling to correct the mistakes but without any luck, and it's not worth anyone's time to deal with the issues because all that's happened is that it hard-coded the errors which existed, but which I managed to repair in the 1803 version. In essence the only nice thing I got out of it is the black background file explorer.

I have several Macrium mirrors of v1803 (the latest is 24 hours old) and I want to restore it. Is there a way to block the 1809 update afterwards?

As you have pro, you can defer feature updates (upgrades) for 365 days. That's the easiest option for you presently.

Also set updates to 'Notify' - both via the group policy editor.

Thanks dalchina. Just read about that solution as well. Already restored the last 1803 version. Thanks again.

i always defer MS bug ridden 'Feature Updates' for a minimum of 6 months.

That "October" 1809 update has been a disaster of biblical dimensions. Wiped out my wi-fi drivers, spent hours troubleshooting that until I realized the drivers were missing. Installed the driver, then it still did not work until I patched it.

I should have not have to do all this work.

MS sells Win10 and other versions as user-friendly and they are anything but. Apparently they will now treat your device the same way they treat smart phones and update them at will. You can delay the install somewhat but not cancel it.

Others have had it much worse, lost data in /Documents folder.

The way I deal with it, I have a mirrored drive and if the primary is impacted, I boot off the mirror. I did that and then MS updated (broke) the mirror as well, I don't have Pro and no way to delay it, other than bring down wifi and networking and have a useless brick.

I use metered connection to block updates on W10 home.

I'm currently on a 1709 backup HDD after an 1803 SSD failure (being RMA'd with Sandisk even though it was just outside the 3 year warranty period).
1803 FU and other updates are sat there waiting to be downloaded, nothings happening automatically. That's over a wifi hotspot to 4G connection.
Not sure if ethernet connections on metered will be as strict (it can be done).

I'll wait until my new SSD arrives and clone 1709 and then MCT 1803 onto it from an existing USB flash drive copy.
Not been anywhere near 1809 yet...

Search the forum for 'completely' and you will find a thread on how to block updates completely.
I believe there are other tools around.

Add to that a tool such as Windows Update Minitool (free) and you can scan manually on an ad hoc basis.

You can also block (hide) individual updates as you wish- MS tool or tutorial in Tutorial section here on hiding updates.

    It's here.

Using the MCT route + Microsoft Update Catalogue is another way to control which updates you manually apply.
Keep the MCT's feature updates on separate USB/DVD drives as they come out. I've got a 1709 and an 1803.
And/or keep cloned bootable drives (set to metered) one major FU behind your current system status (my current MO).
