For startup and recovery system failure:
    a) uncheck automatically restart
    b) reboot to maintain settings

If automatically restart is checked it can be easy to miss BSOD.
With automatically restart unchecked you should see a BSOD window with bugcheck and : (
Sometimes you may see a misbehaving driver in the form *.sys
At the very beginning of a BSOD you may see a % counter.
If you see it allow it to rise to 100% before rebooting so that there is sufficient time to create the dump file

    Download and install: Everything:
    voidtools

Use everything to search for: C:\Windows\memory.dmp > zip > post a share link into the thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

Item 9: HP Support Assistant. I have that, but it's been a while since I've used it. I'll show the contents before I do anything. I'm not seeing anything there that needs immediate attention. Maybe you'll tell me different.

    Your instruction below:

    10) Uninstall and reinstall: Intel Wireless Bluetooth filter driver: ibtusb.sys

    Code:
    ibtusb Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) c:\windows\system32\drivers\ibtusb.sys

Updating a driver. - Microsoft Community

The best tested drivers for the computer's configuration are always from the computer manufacturer's website.

    Driver - HP ENVY x360 - 15-aq292cl | HP® Customer Support

    Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) Filter Driver
    Drivers & Software
I only found INTEL BLUETOOTH DRIVER (WINDOWS 10). I only provide this detail because it says nothing about "Filter Driver", nor does it specify ibtusb.sys. It's the only Blue Tooth I found.

So I uninstalled Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R) from the Add/Remove programs panel. I installed the linked driver. I was surprised that my BT mouse still worked after the uninstall (before I reinstalled). Maybe because of no reboot.

    11) Download and install: HP Diagnostics Windows: (right upper area of this link)
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site
I am going to do the above, and run the tests as you requested. This finishes my post for now, except I will answer your last query:

The Laptop is still on warranty.

However, a note about something that may throw a wrench in the works: I pulled the Intel stick SDD drive and replaced it with a 500 GB one, made by Crucial. I still have the original one, and I suppose I can put it back in.

Post a new BETA log collector zip.

On the HP website download all Intel chipset drivers.
If prompted replace them with the driver on the HP website even if newer drivers are already installed.
After the updates perform Windows updates.

Open device manager > click view > click show hidden devices > manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device > post an image into the thread.

For the HP Support Assistant if you view My devices > updates > and there are updates then you can install the updates detected as needed

On some HP computers there are both HP support assistant and HP softpaq download manager. One software may detect an item not detected by the other.
Most needed drivers are detected by the HP support assistant.
It does not evaluate the integrity of the driver (corruption vs no corruption) and only the date.

The computer had many entries in the logs for corrected hardware errors.
If this remains in the logs after all of the troubleshooting steps including the HP Diagnostic Windows then you should contact HP before the warranty expires.

Today I will proceed per your above post.

    HP Diags Results
I left it running over night, and this morning it had a black screen that would not come on. I had to hard shutdown and reboot.

I launched the diags again, selected Test Logs, and there were no logs. So I have no idea about any results to report.

I've attempted this. I don't know if it is working or not. I type in c:\windows\memory.dmp>zip> (Am I supposed to put the > to the right of zip? I have tried that too), and the window clears, and I get no indication whether it is searching or not.

    Continuing with other instructions...

I ran the short version of HP Diags, and all passed.

No Hp Softpaq on this laptop

Nothing to update from HP Support Assistant

I am now going to attempt another long version of the system tests in HP Hardware Diagnostics Window.

There are two log collectors: DM and BETA
The BETA log collector will collect more useful files and folders and at some time will replace the DM log collector.
Please run the BETA log collector after any BSOD or major computer problems and post a zip into the thread.
    https://www.tenforums.com/attachment...-v2-beta15.zip
    (extract all > open)

The memory dumps are typically overwritten, and may be automatically deleted by Windows.
After a BSOD they need to be found quickly before they are overwritten or deleted.
They can be found using file explorer or using Everything search.
    Search for: C:\windows\memory.dmp
The file size can vary and if the the file size is less than 1.5 GB then zip the file and post a separate share link into this thread Please use one drive, drop box, or google drive.

The computer has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM.
There are two 8 GB modules.
Run Memtest86 for eight or more passes:
MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 Memory Testing Tool
Testing is not done by time but by passes.
The more the passes the better the testing conditions.
Testing time is approximately 1 - 2 hours / GB RAM.
A substantial portion of the testing can be performed overnight.
Just one error is a test fail and testing can be aborted.
Then remove both RAM modules and test on module at a time in the same DIMM for eight or more passes to differentiate good from malfunctioning RAM.

When the testing has completed use a camera or smartphone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.

Just now getting to your last post.

Interestingly, main reason, I had booted my computer into the onboard diagnostics, and ran the memory test there. I let it run 10 times. Took all evening up to bedtime. It was successful with zero errors.

I'm running a Beta Log Collector. During the run, it had the comment "Failed to download autorunsc, skipping...". The resulting file is attached.

I just turned off "Disable automatic deletion of memory dumps when disk space is low". I don't know if that will allow the dmp files to be created or not. My C: drive has 380GB of space, so I wouldn't think they should be deleted.

Browsing around in the control panel, I found this:

PC Freezing for short periods -> DistributedCOM Error?-image.png

That suggests to me I'm not getting restore points. However I find this on restore points:

PC Freezing for short periods -> DistributedCOM Error?-image.png

Wondering if I should make any changes to the settings.

I will run the memory test you suggested today.
