Reasoning why not keeping windows up to date causes most issues

Been working in a IT Role of the last 6 months or so I find that to half any IT issues is usually fixed with simply seeing windows has not been updated and doing an updates rectifies the issue.

Why does this happen?

From most people' perspectives they would think microsoft force issues to make sure you keep up to date for various reasons. I'm sure this can be debugged but would like to get better understanding on why and application will work one day and no changed occur yet it stops working till windows is updated?

One purpose of MS updating the OS is to fix bugs in it that are discovered.

Hello does not explain why something that works perfectly fine stops working shortly after a windows update was missed.

Updating is a good thing but I feel you should be able to not update and have no problems for 6 months

I think it is simply not possible for anyone to answer that, how the code work, why and whet it's updated is decided elsewhere.

An operating computer is in a constant state of change, regardless of whether or not software is updated. Nobody can predict how any specific change will affect the infinite combinations of hardware and software installed on it. Sometimes a change will have a positive effect, sometimes it will have a negative effect. The same change may be positive on one computer, and it might crash the computer right next to it.

This is also true to same extent (even if quite exagerated), and if you look for a true answer you should be more specific on what software stops working and when as you said in post #1

Windows defender is way to involved in win-10.

Updates to other Programs might have dependencies on having the Windows updated ? Now while I haven't talked to him in a while, I have a friend that was still running a Never updated copy of Win 8.0 without any anti-virus and he never had a single problem.

I can agree at some extent, but you can't also update blindly without expecting potential problems, like Insiders zip decompression issues (you can not count this one, is an insider problem after all), or the problem with default app settings or now the newest "I deactivate your AV and remove integration with Defender because why not?".

This are the things that refrain me from moving from build 17134.320, I don't want to deal with borked settings, and seems that I will be able to update probably on mid December, if Microsoft can fix their issues... let's hope...

I still remember the days I used Windows 7... not even a single update, and never had to deal with stuff, just the usual "update this driver to get your HDD working good"...
