Batch file to enable GPE in Windows 10 Home

Firstly thanks for allowing me into the forum. I had some great help at the sister Windows 7 Forum but am now starting to get up to speed on W10. I only installed it yesterday and am just finding out about how it all works in so far as my requirements. The thing that troubles me is the lack of being able to choose when to download and install Windows updates. I believe that you can use the Group Policy Editor in the Pro version to be able to choose like you could in W7. I really object to MS forcing every update on me and seeing as I will be using this at work on mobile broadband it is not satisfactory as I have limited bandwidth available. On W7 I would get notified of updates and then take the PC home and do the updates where I had a lot of free bandwidth available. I came across this batch file that claims to be able to enable the GPE in W10 Home and am wondering if it seems worth trying? The site appears to be reputable but I have been suckered in before so I prefer to ask those with better judgement. Thanks for any help or advice.

You can enable the GPE, but whether it will have the same effect as in a real Pro installation is another matter.
See these and note comments carefully:
Will Installing 'Group Policy' on Home Edition Cause Problems? - Windows 10 Forums
Enable Group Policy in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

With Pro up you can set updates to Notify, and defer feature updates (upgrades) for example.

I really object to MS forcing every update on me
    - you can't really object, as you've only paid for Home. That's how that works. Pay more, upgrade to Pro, and you get Pro features.

As to whether you think Home should have the specification it does, that's another matter, and with MS's increasingly poor reputation for buggy upgrades and updates (especially post build 1709), I'd agree it's hugely problematic, as I would that Active Hours (to stop unwanted update-related restarts) is off by default.

Here's one way to manage updates with Home (this topic is SO often discussed) here it is again:

    a. Block updates
Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely Solved - Windows 10 Forums

    b. Use Windows Update Minitool (free, easily found).
This gives you control as you can scan manually.

Thanks for that dalchina I actually did find the "Stop Windows 10 Updates Properly and Completely Solved - Windows 10 Forums" thread after I posted this question so I will read that thoroughly.

I suppose that what I mean is that with W7 Home you could get notifications when (and if) to download and install so yes, I do object to that

Thanks a lot for the links.

    I know what you mean.

It's a backwards step by MS, along with downgrading options as they move them from the Control Panel. Based on their concept of continuously delivering seamless and flawless updates, which they aren't going to be able to do.

By default, a Win 10 PC will restart with little or no warning after some updates; commence a build upgrade... MS clearly has the customer's best interests at heart. Only relatively informed people can cope with what is not a consumer product, endlessly tweaked against no fixed spec. (Whereas Win 7 simply had hundreds of updates and 3 service packs, all to the same basic spec).

So I agree- poorly conceived- and MS seems only with great reluctance to have made small concessions - like options to limit bandwidth used for updates, and extending the Active Hours period from 12 to 18.

Pity the people on limited bandwidth with repeatedly failing build upgrades... it happens.

Exactly and this is my situation on my PC at work. I have limited bandwidth on mobile broadband and if I exceed my data allowance the extra data can be a considerable cost impost. This is the PC that I have W10 on but the old one with W7, I was taking it home every couple of weeks or so to do the updates on the ADSL2+ that I have plenty of data allowance on.

I believe that you can limit bandwidth on a WiFi connection but not an Ethernet one. Where does a mobile broadband connection like I have fall into this please as it is not actually WiFi ? Thanks for your time too

I have Windows 10 Home and mobile broadband. I was using a dongle but now use HomeFi:

Anyway GPE on W10 Home doesn't turn home into Pro or offer additional features. Only some settings will stick in Home and it is hit or miss.

Read this article regarding an alternative to GPE on W10 Home:

    No magical solutions

One thing that you need to remember - Policy Plus is NOT a replacement for buying the "higher" editions of Windows. For instance, on Windows 10 Home, there was no option to stop telemetry or Windows Updates. Certain features are just not there, and having a UI does not change that. Policy Plus can only do what the system can do, with a nicer frontend and more safety than rummaging through the registry. This is definitely not a short way of having enterprise functionality. It does not work that way.
Windows 10 - No group policy editor? Policy Plus!

Example: Windows Defender Solved - Page 5 - Windows 10 Forums

I use WUMT Wrapper Script to control updates. There is a thread here:

FYI: I use the portable version.

Download WUMT Wrapper Script - MajorGeeks

You just run the script and it will disable updates.

Then if you decide to check for available updates you can do so without selecting anything to be installed.

If you close the window shown above or continue with an update check then close the window - update are disabled.

FYI: For cumulative updates I found that it's better to download them from Microsoft Update Catalog and install offline after runnning WUMT Wrapper Script to enable updates. Update service needs to be enabled during manual updates installation. The service can be disabled once the updates are installed.

The new replacement for WUMT (Windows Update MiniTool) is David Xanatos Windows Update Manager. Use that program instead: on Win10 Home it will give you complete control over updates, no wrapper script required. Check it out at GitHub - DavidXanatos/wumgr: Windows update managemetn tool for windows 10
