Username change caused serious problems

Yes, as soon as things started going wrong after the User/Administrator name change, she luckily had the presence of mind to back up all she was doing this week onto an external hard-disk, and also onto her old laptop.

Thankfully, although she is always impatient and stressed, she is very methodical and careful, and her backups are rarely more than a week old. They contain ALL her work from her 4-year Degree studies, and now also the Masters she started in October.

Contrary to my convictions, both my daughters seem to be bery trusting towards Microsoft and their Windows 10, as well as their "infallibility".
Anything I try to tell them about being more critical and wary is always countered with comments about my believing in conspiracy theories, and me being a totally obsolete dinosaur with my Windows XP and old programs that won´t work on anything newer.

Nevertheless, I´ll warn them to be watchfull regarding the expected re-release of the month-overdue build. Thanks for the tip!

Whoever heard of user accounts being required to switch on a computer when Windows XP came out? Quite soon I learnt to block Windows updates on old computers as they slowed them down to a smail´s pace. Not so with more modern ones, I suppose.

Well, as I said, just out of curiosity I´ll get the Update number (maybe this afternoon) that is giving installation errors at the moment, to see what it´s about and to let you know, as probably any such info will be useful to you.

Thanks again for the warning on the pending overdue build.
Now I´m off to the repair shop for the keyboard of my own laptop...

How to save money with less, lower paid staff, and no Quality Control Dept. That´s us,
and we even pay for their stuff.

I´m told the price of a new laptop includes 80 dollars for the cost of the reduced Win10
Home edition that comes with it, not to mention what the full Home and Pro editions cost.

Remember how Microsoft gave away Windows 10 free for over 6 months when it came out?
They raked in all the error reports, slapped on corrections and started selling it.
So it goes on: We report, they botch up fixes, and it never stops.

I also remember how they discontinued Windows XP. Their Win7 and Win8 weren´t selling
so well, so they just wrecked WinXP support, forced the new stuff down people´s throats,
applying the Alfred E. Newman idea "What, me worry?"

OK, dalchina!
Here we are: Build Version is 1709, compilation DSO 16299.726.
Then, it´s now 2 updates, shown in the update list, not 1, that I was wondering about, although there´s no trouble of any kind.
- KB4090007 gives an installation error, and
- KB4041994 gave a similar error yesterday, and now shows up as having a download delay - at least that´s what my daughter said.
I haven´t had time to look these up in the Microsoft Update Information Bank, but will do so tonight, as I have to rush off right now!

Sorry, it was my mistaken deduction for the reason behind the price difference between the 80 dollars corresponding to the Win10 OS in the price of a new laptop, and the 139$ for the Home Edition and 199 $ for Pro if bought separately.

The point I was trying to make, was that at these prices, one would expect things to run a little more smoothly, or at least get System Warnings when changes can be dangerous, and/or information publications that are a little more elaborate, which not only tell you different ways of doing things, but what to look out for. Many know, but also, many don´t, and they fall into traps, even by exactly following instructions given.

You´re right - am aware that any licensed Win7 or Win8 user can upgrade to Win10 without extra charge.
I was able to do just that actually with my own laptop that had Windows 8.1 on it, and now it´s running Windows 10, so that was included in the 450$ it cost 3 years ago. But of course, how long this "free" upgrading will last, I wouldn´t know.
I knew the activation servers were still on, and people were wondering when they would close down. So it actually happened last week! Interesting...

The PC is not registered for insider upgrades - how strange...
... and I´ll check if the latest one you mention is in, although I expect it should be,
the Cumulative Update KB4462932 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.755.

Regarding the problems we are talking about, perhaps it´s just that Windows 10 is so very complicated, hence difficult to develop. An OS which can interconnect your desktop, laptop, cellphone, tablet, smart TV, Domotics, and a robotic dog too, I´m sure, just with your user account, can´t be very simple, especially security-wise.

But if you just want to be able to work on your computer and do e-mails, it´s like killing a fly with a sledge hammer, and because there are bugs, you can hit your fingers.
