msconfig freezes when I try to apply changes

In the process of using msconfig.exe to set up a clean boot, I found that when I make any changes (i.e. disabling non-Microsoft services) msconfig freezes as soon as I click "apply" and I have to perform a hard reset to get my PC going again. Even just disabling a single service causes this to happen. I'm not experiencing any other serious problems. Any ideas how to fix this?

Have you tried the file checks? That is sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ? This could very well be an issue with the msconfig.exe file itself or one of its key, behind-the-scenes components. Hence my recommendations...

Yes - I ran both sfc /scannow and DISM /online/ cleanup-Image / checkhealth (rather than restorehealth) no problems were found.

OK, then: that's weird. What version/build of Win10 are you running? Any other signs of misbehavior? At this point, depending on release and so forth, you might want to consider an upgrade repair install to see if it helps.
    Sorry for your troubles,

Windows 10 (Home) 64 bit, Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.376). I have been experiencing a small problem with Windows time not syncing properly with the NTP server (see other recent thread "Windows Time Sync Offset") there is always a small offset. The only reason I discovered the problem with msconfig was that I was trying to see if a particular service was causing this offset. I suppose the two issues could be related, but neither is causing any major problems at present, so I don't feel inclined to do a repair which I assume would mean having to re-install most of my applications.

Repair install does not require re-installing applications. It does require resetting some items and settings from their defaults (for example, you might have to go into Files & Folders to restore display of file extensions, show hidden and system files, and so forth). But it's usually no more than 15 minutes' work after performing the repair install. Check out the TF tutorial: it will set you straight. In-place Upgrade Repair Install.
HTH, and good luck with your issues, which sound vexatious.

Thanks Ed, I really appreciate you taking the time to read my posts and give your advice. I have a heavy workload for the next couple of weeks, but once I get through that I will look seriously at Repair Install, as you suggest. In the meantime I will use check out the tutorial - thanks for the link. Steve

You're welcome. It's saved my system from self-inflicted damage on more than one occasion. Highly recommended when weird stuff happens or goes wrong, and the "usual suspects" are nowhere in sight.
Good luck in making your repairs.
