When typing, all of a sudden everything I typed is deleted and lost

I've had a new HP laptop with Windows 10 (I'm used to Windows 7).

Sometimes while I'm typing an email or listing an item for sale on etsy etc, all my typing is deleted and lost - it seems to be some key I'm hitting. I've tied looking at keyboard setting, but these key button short cuts are still a problem, sometimes other things happen, like I get a pop up asking if I want to reload the page, or I get an inspection screen.

It is often typing letters such as C, H, B, F...

Any help appreciated, as it's so annoying. I just spent 10 mins typing an email and it all got lost.

Can you confirm the problem is confined to using a browser, as that seems to be what you are talking about. If so, which browser?

Which Windows build are you using?
    Window key + R, winver

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm using Google Chrome browser, the one I used previously with windows 7 and never had issues like this.

The versionis 1703 OS Build 15063.1387

    Hope that helps?

Or the situation is like my wife's Notebook/Laptop, the Touchpad is too sensitive to thumbs touching it causing "things" to happen so she has turned it off and uses a Wireless USB Mouse. I also notice the issue with older Notebooks Upgraded to Win10 that I don't recall having on Win7 and earlier.

Try looking for settings equivalent to these: (there are different touchpads/clickpads/makes so you probably won't see the same)

You can experiment - try making sure you are not touching the touchpad at all for a time- cover it, perhaps.

Noted your build is 1703, which is older- is there any reason for that? I have 1709, a year old, and 1803 came out over 6 months ago. Currently people are waiting with bated breath for the re-release of 1809.

As you're used to '7, you may prefer a replacement start menu many here use- combines features of start menus from XP to '7 and more - supports columns, different formats, drag 'n drop, access to the Start-up folder etc etc - Open Shell (free) - was Classic Shell.

I've no idea why the build is older, we bought the laptop a few weeks ago - should I be complaining to the store? I found some simple settings to adjust, but I think I will just have to avoid touching the mouse pad while typing... thanks for the tips . I might try a wireless mouse too.

Buying a new computer doesn't mean it has the latest OS, too time consuming/costly to Upgrade or update them by the stores after having them in stock, just selling them as they receive them. Some stores like BestBuy may update when installing programs and/or copying data after purchase but don't count on others like Wal*Mart, Costco, Sam's Club, K-Mart, etc., doing it, either don't have the personnel available or the space set aside for doing such things. Even independent shops/stores may not take the time to do it unless specified by the buyer who may not be aware it doesn't have the latest. Custom builders tend to use the latest.

I'm based in UK and used a local shop, but thanks for the heads up. I'm sure I'll get used to Win 10 eventually, and many thanks for all the advise.

Just check that Windows Update is actually working.. you should have had some updates by now (Settings, Update History) - and Store apps - which are frequently updated.

When typing, all of a sudden everything I typed is deleted and lost-untitled.png

Click that - you should see a list.

Of course, the question is how is MS handling build upgrades just at present....(!) (with 1809 on hold)

Don't forget to consolidate your working state by starting to use disk imaging routinely - very strongly recommended by most here- e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external storage for disk image sets.

On Windows Updates you might want to read
    Windows 10 update servicing cadence
Windows 10 update servicing cadence - Windows 10 Forums

I pin Update and Security to the Start page so I can view update status conveniently.

Consider creating a system image backup on an external hard drive.
--- I use Macrium Reflect Free at the end of each month so I'll know my computer is ready for the following month's updates.
