So I'm gonna start using normal sleep mode settings and see what happens, but I have a high confidence that disabling the C-State's is was fixed it. Been running for over 12 hours now without issue.

Having read I think all the threads online, it may be time document this. As you can see from my posts, I've been hammering this issue pretty much 24/7 for a couple of weeks. There are SEVERAL things that CAN cause windows 10 to misbehave, but they are easy to rule out.

    • Check temps and fan speeds (make sure nothing is overheating re: hwinfo)
    • Check the Event Log and Event History (look for causes of the freeze, likely won't find any, but look)
    • Run task manager open on the performance tab and open the resource monitor. (Sort to items in the Resource Monitor by the CPU column to you can see what was running when the system freezes.)
    • Run MemCheck (just to make sure, especially if you are building a new machine the foundation is solid)
    • Drivers being correct and up-to-date. (yeah we probably all did that first)
    • Running the sfc scan (just to make sure none of the freezes corrupted or damaged anything)
    • Running CheckDSK scan (to ensure non of the freezes corrupted or damaged any files.)
    • Set the PSIe Link Mode to off if applicable (might need/want it on laptop, not much use on a desktop).
    • UNpark the CPU's (again, might not want to on Laptop, but might help with troubleshooting)
    • Disable C-States.. (short version, disables the ability of the PC to underClock itself.) This was the winner for me.

I was skeptical. I've tried everything. Finally stumbled upon that gem when I was more specific with my cpu and mainboard

    more about software conflicts

Hey there! Yesterday I updated my Desktop OS from Win 7 home prem to Win 10 home. In my case I have a DELL XPS 8300 upgraded with a Crucial 500 Gb SSD, the original 2Tb Seagate is secondary, and a AMD R9 2 Gb GPU. Never had a problem running Win 7 with Mac Afee Total Protection.
I had a previous experience doing so with my Dell XPS 14 with no issues.
BUT in this case, since I finished the update I've been experiencing randomly freezes, which required hard resets as only exit. I started to research and this tread was very useful.
I updated Windows and all drivers I found. Still had the problem...I watched for C state issues but that wasn't the case. I changed the power management settings to best performance, and this helped. The freezing issue continued but with [COLOR=#3e3e3e]less frequency.
Finally I read about Broadcomm & Qualcomm problems with Win 10. I checked DELL's support web site and they don't give support to my XPS using Win 10, and all drivers seemed to be updated.
Then I decided to uninstall all Broadcomm drivers (those were the original drivers for Bluetooth and Wifi) and VOILA! Didn't had more freezing issues for 6 hours to now. I guess it's solved since I couldn't keep it working for more than 20 minutes before this.
Hope it's the end of this painful path! Wanna thank all guys who helped, and I hope my experience helps someone else.

    UPDATE #1:

Well the W10 random freeze issues seem to be something not easy to resolve. System improved a lot after what I did but still happens, but not with the same annoying frequency.
It was clear to me that Dell original software was in conflict with W10 (originally released in 2011/2012) Somehow things I uninstalled appeared again. Dell Stage music and video studios were imposible to uninstall and that was the last original software I kept.
Couldn't uninstalll them with W10 program manager and with CCleaner neither. Revo Uninstaller was the cure, it's by far the best uninstaller, besides I makes a seek and erase of all dirty stuff and temps that remains after simple uninstalls. System seems to run smoother and faster, and didn't had any further problem till now.

    UPDATE #2:
I don't know why but Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet driver freezes my XPS 8300. Despite I uninstalled it several times, it gets reinstalled at booting. The Device Manager said it was updated, but it really was not. So I found this post that wich was really helpful, and followed it to update it:
Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet Windows 10 driver Lucian Web Service
Let's see what happens from now on, but I'm pretty confident this will work. If it doesn't will just disable it!!!

9 month battle with random freezes continues...

I have been battling random freezes with my computer since Christmas....

I have installed windows 10 on 4 different laptops and they run flawlessly without an issue. My desktop has random freezing issues that can take place as quick as 2 minutes into operation or go a full hour before locking up.

The desktop computer is a custom build:

    Intel(R) Core 2 Extreme Q6850
    ASUS STRIKER MOTHERBOARD
    8 GB of RAM
2x GeForce 8800 Ultras running in SLI
    Creative SB X-Fi Soundcard
    64bit
    NO OVERCLOCKING

Ran Windows 7 flawlessly. Never had an issue. Initially ran windows 10. Once the updates started to become frequent the more problems I had running Windows 10. This issue I have started back in December. The system would randomly restart. That was annoying but at least it would reboot itself. Shortly there after it would randomly freeze and lock up. Screen freezes and mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. Hardboot required to restore. I read the first 8 pages of this thread and I can tell you that none of the software mentioned as a potential cause of this issue are on my system.

There are somethings I notice that my be causes...

The longer my system has been on, the more likely it is going to freeze up. Possible heat issue?
Anything running Adobe Flash or Shockwave can cause it to freeze some of the time.
Multi tasking no matter how small or big the multitasking is can cause it to freeze
Having two different browsers running at the same time can cause it to freeze.

Some of the posts at the end here make sense to me. It seems like Windows 10 was designed for mobile systems running on batteries (Laptops, Tablets, Phones) and not so much for desktop systems. I am thinking some of the mobile environment settings and such may be at the heart of the problem. Perhaps the settings are causing my system to overheat. I have air cooling in a complete push pull set up. The case is a virtual wind tunnel keeping my temp readings slightly above room temperature. I havent tried the fix yet and I am going to read the entire thread but I wanted to post this out there in case someone had a fix, suggestion, or solution for me.

My solution to the problem was pretty simple. Just copy a movie on to the documents folder. Launch it .. zero out the volume . Minimise it and continue to work. If you wanted to watch another movie.. use two different players and launch the files from two drive partitions or drives completely. Well it works for me.

How does this fix Windows 10 freezing issues?

It looks like something related to graphics or interrupt or CPU power state.
I had random freeze with clean install too, until after I did these, no more random freeze:
    1) Installed all drivers, including graphics driver, for both internal and discrete graphics card.
    2) Set power plan to "High Performance" in Power Option.

My laptop with Intel processor has no BIOS option for me to turn off CPU C-state.

If CPU C-state is a suspect, can try temporary disable the "intelppm" service in registry at:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\intelppm", by changing "Start" DWORD value to "4".
You will see yellow bang on all the processors inside device manager after "intelppm" service is disabled.
