This is just an update, and I am still downgrading to windows 7 for the stability. I thought I would give you guys something else to chew on.

I found my fan was caked. Cleaned it and it now just freezes for only a few secs to mins instead of completely requiring a hard reset, but when it comes back it usually closes all opened file viewers and resets explorer.

if 7zip is doing something while you are doing another, it obiously is the culprit.

There can be other factors too. For example, your computer has virus or malware, or the antimalware process is doing scheduled scan. Or you have 4GB of ram.

Was praying this was my solution too but sadly not. Even after doing this and rebooting the next time Windows loads i get the eventual freeze and same symptoms you described. I have now regressed back to win7 which works perfectly. I will try a clean install of Win10 when I have time to rule out any s/w issues.

    Thanks anyway.

On my side, I just bought a new Thinkpad T470s with windows 10 pro installed on it. On the fresh install, I had the same issue, windows was hangs / freezing randomly. I past the last two days looking for a solution, I've updated everything, system, drivers, bios, firmware, disabled PCIe links power management, disabled quick boot, nothing changes …. but you know what? Your solution is the one who as worked!

As you, I exec the command and noticed that issue went away until I've rebooted my computer.
So what I did is to register a task in the windows task scheduler to automatically run that fixing command each time a user log in (executed with admin permissions, obv), and now, I can tell you that the issue is belonging to past !!!!

Here how to do, if it works for you to, thanks to confirm:

    1. Open task scheduler (WIN + Task Scheduler + Enter)
    2. On the top menu, click on Action > Create Task ….
    3. Following, the screenshot of the parameters I've configured

I was having this issue on a new build from March using i7-8700K Processor Samsung 960 EVO S B PCIe NVMe - M.2 Internal SSD etc. I run PC 24/7 but sleeps when I do! The freeze would happen every few days. But miracles must happen it hasn't frozen now in a few weeks. Perhaps latest Win10 update fixed but as soon as I say this, it might come back again

I have a friend with a laptop with same issue have been trying to help.

Hey guys. I've had the same issues a lot of people here have been having. I've probably tried everything to fix this issue, but there was one thing that actually fixed it. It was because of the Miscrosoft AHCI driver that gets automatically installed when you reformat windows, that's why a reformat doesn't fix anything.

What I did to fix my issue completely was to install Intels RST AHCI driver (Support for Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST)). After this, I have not experienced any issues at all.

To check if you're using the Microsoft AHCI driver, go to device manager and check under AHCI controllers. Double-click the options there and look for "Driver Provider". If it says "Microsoft", try to install the Intel one.
