    All tray icons are inactive

This is the third time within a few days that this has happened. All my tray icons are inactive and have lost their colour. Have not yet isolated what action directly preceded it. I just look up from whatever I'm typing or viewing or navigating etc, and they're black, white and grey and do nothing when clicked.

A restart fixes it, or closing Explorer from the TM and restarting it. But anyone know the likely cause and fix please?

The Taskbar icons are all OK.

This is Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.345)

By tray icons do you mean the ones on the right side of the Taskbar that represent running programs?

Yea, I'm slightly confused by them turning mono-colored. Can you post a screen shot of that?

First the terminology. I was using the familiar label 'tray icons' (system tray or 'systray' icons) which are now apparently grouped (rather misleadingly IMO) within the label 'Notification icons'. Here's a screenshot showing the current state of the icons that have been suffering the way I described., but currently in their correct state:

If/when it happens again I'll post another screenshot.

From my latest research, one candidate culprit might be Classic Start Menu, which I have had installed for years without problem:

You have Quick Launch setup on the Taskbar (left side) I suspect that is the area that is having problems, right?
Quick Launch is really no longer needed as you can pin Icons directly to the Taskbar. Maybe give that a try instead and see if it solves the problem?

No problems with Quick launch, other than always being slowish to open. And I already have many icons pinned to the Taskbar.

What version of Windows 10 do you have? Enter winver from a run box to see. For instance on my PC it says Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.55).

    Quote from my opening post:
"This is Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.345)"

And yesterday I updated to (OS Build 17134.376.

Puzzled that yours appears so much later. Is there some way I can update even though Settings tells me I am fully up to date already?

I got the October 2018 build before it was pulled by Microsoft for some serious data loss problems on some computers, not mine though.

Which area of the Taskbar do you have problems with?

As already shown in my carefully prepared screenshot. You plainly don’t bother to read before you rattle off your replies.
