My virtually bricked computer — please help

So, roughly 2.5 years ago, my Dell Inspiron n5050, which was on Windows 10 for about seven months, randomly incurred a Temporary Profile error, and I could not access my files. Fast forward to July of that same year, and I decided to use a YouTube video tutorial to try to solve my problem. Here's the link. You MUST watch the video, otherwise you will not understand my problem.

How to fix Temporary Profile Login error on Windows 10, 8 1, 7 - YouTube

I followed literally everything the video did, down to the letter, but when I restarted the computer, the desktop background was still there, but all of my documents and personal files were gone -- nowhere to be found. It did not occur to me that I could've used System Restore and then asked this question. Now, it is almost November 2018, and not only have I still not recovered my files, but I also accidentally deleted my audio drivers. I cannot use system restore because because July 27, 2016 is obviously no longer on the list of System Restore points.

Fast forward to October 25, 2018. After 2+ years of not being able to use my laptop due to a dead battery and a rotten AC adapter, I finally was able to turn on my laptop. However, I am largely unable to use the mousepad to operate the cursor, and I get occasional notifications on the lower right-hand side of the screen telling me that “malware is detected” and “Windows is taking steps to resolve it.” In addition, I have also taken steps to try to reset my laptop, but it always gets to roughly 35% completion before an unexpected blue screen of death error occurs. So, this may be a loaded situation, but my questions are:

    1. Can I fix my mousepad so I can actually use it? If so, how?
    2. Is it dangerous to try to reset my laptop, especially since my personal files are nowhere to be found?
    3. If I can’t restore my files, then can I at least get my audio drivers back?

Thanks to anyone who reads this and gives a legitimate response.

Using another computer, create a bootable USB flash drive of Kyhi's Recovery Tools, boot the computer from it and see what you can copy off the hard drive, then do a clean re-install of Windows 10:

repeatedly pressing the F12 key when the dell logo appears when you turn on the laptop will get it into the boot menu allowing you to boot from USB flash drive.

Did the Notebook come with Win10 or something earlier? Somewhere on the case or in the battery compartment will be a sticker with a Service Tag number and probably an Express Service Code number. Write down the Service Tag number and go to Support | Dell US to plug in that number, will lead you to the drivers for that machine and sometimes for more than 1 version of Windows. If it came with Win8.1 or earlier those drivers may work but be sure they are either 32-bit or 64-bit, whichever the installed Windows was.

Yes, the Dell Inspiron N5050 came with Windows 7. I’ve had it since July 25, 2012.

Hello @ooboh Welcome to Tenforums :)

To fix ur sound and mouse drivers go to Support for Inspiron 15 N5050 | Drivers & downloads | Dell US

I'm not sure what OS you use but if it is win10 it should still work even tho they only have drivers up to win8 to select from. If not let me know and i'll do my best to find another source.

When it comes to ur files, have you checked to see if they really are gone from the harddrive ?
If you're lucky it's just located into another folder inside another user located at C:\Users
@ folder options > view > make sure it's set to " show hidden files and folders "

When it comes to the guy in the yt vid, please don't use any more of his guides, the guy uses IObit...

It is not dangerous to reset ur pc, but we should do our best to recover ur files first if they are still on the hdd.
the malware can be easily be taken care of but, if ur pc crash due to a bsod, it might be a good idea to check the health of the hdd itself first.

There are two areas to use the Windows advanced troubleshooting menu.
    a) the computer
    b) a Windows 10 iso

The Windows advanced troubleshooting menu has additional menu items that are not available when using the Windows 10 iso such as reset save files and reset remove files.

The reset remove files should fix the windows malware problem and the driver problem.
Windows will install default Microsoft drivers until you download and install drivers directly form the computer manufacturer's website.
If reset save files fails then you can perform a custom install.

The reset remove files should also fix the malware impacting windows and the driver problem however unless files are backed up they will be lost.

All of the personal files will need to be scanned for malware.

The best method is the one that NavyLCDR has already commented on and that is using Kyhi Boot rescue to back up files to another drive.
If Kyhi boot rescue were not available or if you did not know about the tool you could perform a custom install.
The Kyhi boot rescue will provide an extra layer of protection as you will have already backed up any files.

Once you have files backed up to another drive you can either clean install or custom install.
Custom install will be quicker as you do not have a backup image.

For drivers the best tested drivers are the Dell drivers. Unfortunately they were only tested up to Windows 8.1.
So it is trial and error to see the performance in Windows 10.

When you get your PC working I strongly recommend you make a full system backup using the excellent program Macrium Reflect Free. You could have recovered your PC from backup in less than half an hour.

Could you walk me through it a little? The Kyhi link you sent me to is a little confusing.

It's not really worth your time trying to repair your system. I would follow the instructions to do a Clean Install of Windows 10. First,. create a Bootable USB Flash drive of Windows 10, then follow the instructions to do a clean install.
This would be the fastest, cleanest and easiest way to reclaim your laptop since it has been out of commission for so long.
