Do not use websites that update drivers as you won't know if they install unwanted files.

Please uninstall and reinstall the Realtek audio drivers.
Sorry if I am sounding dense, but the instructions in the message to which I am reply is rather different from what you had posted earlier.

Is this what I should do:

    1. Download the file from Dell.
    2. Delete the file, Realtek High Definition Audio Driver, in Control Panel.
    3. Run the downloaded Dell file.

As you have no doubt already deduced, I am not a computer software person; in fact, I have never taken a single course of anything related to computing. I know how to do somethings, others (such as this one), I have never done, having only been computing since March, 1983, a very short time span in terms of my academic background as a medieval historian. Thus, I simply need to be certain that I understand what you are telling me, but translated as it were into my words.

See if this link is useful for uninstalling and reinstalling drivers:
Updating a driver. - Microsoft Community

If you needed to uninstall wireless and ethernet drivers and only had access with one or the other you would download both to the desktop. Then disconnect from the internet. Uninstall drivers and then install the drivers from the desktop. After the installation of new drivers connect to the internet and Windows will attempt to update drivers as needed.

Before I ask yet more questions, please remember that I do not comprehend the technical jargon that you naturally use in replying to me. I am all too familiar with doing the same thing, especially in my two major personae as a medieval historian and a fire chief. A simple example: When a home owner asks me why we cut a hole in the roof of the house, I start talking about such arcana as how fires spread, then realize that I need to stop and provide the proper non-technical explanation. "We cut the hole to allow the smoke to escape and make it easier for us to enter the building and put the fire out."
I followed my own three-step procedure to remove and reinstall the video driver.
    1. "Launch any problematic software, evaluate video performance, boot and shut down times while in clean boot." What does this mean? I have only one know problematic software, and that is a plugin for PaintShop Pro; is testing in clean boot even able to diagnose this, and if so, how would I even enter the information in the test procedure? Are there other things that I should be testing? How do I evaluate video performance, boot and shutdown times in clean boot?
    2. While in clean boot, do I enter this (to me) strange entry, c:\efi\microsoft\boot\resources\custom\bootres.dll , and try,, using the fourteen-page forum tutorial (printed and in front of me and I write this) to try to repair it?
    3. Are there other things I need to do while in clean boot?
As always, please know that I certainly and greatly appreciate your assistance, especially as it is for things of which I have no knowledge whatsoever, a lack which is why I must keep asking questions before delving into matters which my lack could easily cause me to make things worse, not better.

For clean install all non-Microsoft services are turned off and software that launch on boot are disabled.
These steps are used to see if there is/are non-Microsoft software causing performance problems.

When in clean boot there will be objective and subjective criteria.
For example the boot time could be timed to compare before and after.
Audio and video could be subjectively evaluated.
If there is a noticeable difference between normal boot and clean boot then you could modify the boot items to find the problematic services.

Many computer end users use selective boot.
In selective boot you decide what can and can not launch on boot.
Then after boot if you need software it is then launched.
It's like entering a room and deciding which items will turn on when you flip the light switch.
All of the electrical items that are connected to sockets will no longer turn on when the switch is flipped.
Just the items that you prefer.

If there is no change in clean boot then there is nothing further to due with this trial and error step.
The computer can then be returned to normal or selective boot.

The dll file should have been fixed by the startup repair.
Running both scannow and restorehealth will be useful in determining whether there is or is not problems with the operating system or component store. The chkdsk command will check the drive files system while the computer is in use. There are commands that can be run if necessary to look deeper into the drive file system. When available please post the results into the thread.

(I shortened your quote, so as not to take up too much room unnecessarily.)

Super! Thanks, that is precisely the type of reply I was hoping for, which I have already printe, so as to have it available once I run the clean boot. You have very nicely explained to me what I should expect, and what I can do, which greatly relieves my level of concern.

"All of the electrical items that are connected to sockets will no longer turn on when the switch is flipped."

What happens when, seated at the control panel for a then state-of-the-art lighting control system in one of the finest small college theaters in the US, you switch from one of the ten sets of lighting intensities ("preset") to the next present, and the theater goes dark? This was during the dress rehearsal for the first presentation to be made once the new system was installed, tested, and used during non-dress rehearsals the second semester of my freshman year.

I was able to calm down the director, explain that I had no idea what the problem was, but would move on to the next preset to see what might happen. That worked, the dress rehearsal finished, and my classmate (who ran the preset board, changing each of the ten presets as they were used to be ready for the next use) started to try to find out why that one preset did not work. A few hours later, after a great deal of puzzling, reading the manuals, etc., we found not that a switch was flipped but, rather, the circuit breaker on the control panel for that preset was short circuited; replaced same, left a message in the shop, returned to our dorm.

I shall be back in a day or two with requested results and any pertinent output from the clean boot.

    Again, THANK YOU.

    These are options:

    1) If there are important files it is always best to have files backed up and an up to date backup image:
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free
Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect | Windows 10 Tutorials

    2) Perform an in place upgrade repair (this should keep files and applications and reset windows customized settings to default)

    Download Windows 10

    3) If an in place upgrade repair does not fix the underlying problems then reset save files (this should keep files. Applications and drivers will need to be reinstalled)

Files are backed up daily with Macrium Reflect. An in-place Upgrade has been done twice within the past two weeks or so. I rather doubt that a reset save files will help: The problem is isolated to a single plugin, which is installed through a 866KB .exe installer.

I have that program in my download folder; just occurred to me that I never tried to delete and reinstall it, something that has not be suggested by Corel tech support. I am going to try that, perhaps even figure out how to get a new copy: It is not free, but is part of my PaintShop Pro package. Corel has been trying to figure out why it won't work for me, and it was Corel that informed me that I have a number of corrupt programs/files on my computer. That is possible, of course, but if so I would expect other programs to demonstrate problems. I have not run every single program, but none of my major programs exhibit any difficulties.

As it is, I see more problems with Windows 10 updates that with any thing else, but even there, the problems are usually duplicated on my wife's computer and reports about them also show up here.

If that works then you are set.
If that does not work then keeping files with a clean install of Windows may fix the problems.
These are similar (clean install, reset remove files0
Other methods are reset save files and custom install windows.

After the above a new image can be created after fresh drivers and applications are installed and files restored.

Using Total Uninstall, I removed, then reinstalled Pic to Paint, which still does not work. I have so informed Corel.

When I did the two in-place updates, I retained all the data. Is that what you are referring to by "keeping files with a clean install of Windows"? As to reset/save and custom install, I doubt that you would be even the slightest bit surprised by my stating that I have no ideas about those.

Thanks for sticking with me, even as I grow more tired about it.
