    Hi, welcome to tenforums.

Your symptom has been discussed on threads here previously e.g.
Windows 10 Search Not Working Solved - Windows 10 Forums

    - where you will see one or two basic diagnostic attempts, then it just seemed to fix itself.

    Basics:
    a. when did this start to occur?
    b. do you have any usable system restore points?
    c. have you made any changes to Indexing Options (search indexing)?
    d. is Windows search indexing working (try it with file explorer - for example, view a folder which is indexed, view Indexing Options (Control Panel) at the same time- note the number of items indexed- add one to the folder- hopefully the count will increment.

Try the search troubleshooter: search Settings for search, More results, probably the bottom result

the suggested post only seems to say that "UPDATE: I just powered up my computer today and the search worked. I guess you have to give Windowss 10 a 2 day break, because that's how it fixed for me."

this has been a persistent problem for a month with several days break (with the computer off), so I can say that this is not a sufficient solution.

    a. about 1 month ago
    b. yes 1 every day but only for the last 4 days
    c. no
    d. yes

    Thank you for your reply.

Please confirm you've already tried reinstalling Cortana.

In the post I quoted you will find the idea of creating a new user account for test purposes.
Please do that and compare the outcome.
This discriminates Windows issues from those particular to a user profile.

    scroll to cortana
right click > more > app settings
scroll down to "reset", give it a second,

Thank you so much, been going at it for several hours, reinstalled windows didn't work either.
But finally this simple solution did the trick.
