If you click the arrow pointing up in your tray next to the time, there should be a reddish-brownish speaker icon. Please double click it, and when it opens, there should be a diagram of the audio jacks on your computer on the right. Double-click the green one that your earbuds are connected to and it should give you the option to choose what kind of device it is. If you want it to ask you what you've plugged in every time you plug in an audio device, click the folder icon above the audio jack diagrams.
