Whole Directory Suddenly Gone - How? Why? How to get back?

couldn't get in to see but I think so. I know I tried to have. macrium and ms. I thought it was a pretty small thing. But now the computer has been trying to do a system restore and has spent the last 5 hours telling me it is re writing the registry.

I don't want to interrupt it but I fear its not going to finish and I'll have to: and then I'll have a destroyed system I perhaps can't get into...

I can use kyhi. I used it with some success on this very machine i'm on now just a few days ago.

and we'll see what's what.

It is trying to restore back to before 10/10/18 when it installed a 'critical update'. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't that update that did it all. Surely that wasn't the update that they killed? They'd have told me - but come to think of it they didn't even ask... didn't instruct me or ask me to check the update log or see what restore points there was....

I've already done chkdsk. I think perhaps I said that? That it worked all night and I don't know what it found?

Anyway that's what happened. Because my compute was just waiting for me to log in I assumed chkdsk had finished its run okay and exited - meaning the disk was now alright.

So I've proceeded from there in the belief that the disk surface is okay at least.

But I still get these inexplicable major slownesses and 'can't do' messages.

Like yesterday I got a message it couldn't do the restore. No reason why. I set it retry and and it went the full term.

But it took like five hours just for one part of it: 'restoring registry' it said it was doing. Maybe eight hours overall or something, I don't know.

Then when I'm working on it after all that - a message suddenly comes up saying it was unable to do the restore and no files or folders have been changed !!

Anyway I'm using it. This is it. And I find I have no macrium image. So I'v made one. It is just completing now. Of this corrupt system, sure, but it maybe is fixable and better have an image of this with the software so far installed than start from the beginning again. I mean: you can always go back to the beginning...

I will run that macium HD tune on then, I didn't know about that.

And I'll uproot Malwarebytes and see if I can run defender offline then.
And I'll install avira or avast. Only reason I don't have one of them is I read that defender does just as good a job. But if my defender isn't fully functional... I can't do a scan...
